re Seaman Merchant Services

Post by ASGROOMBRIDGE » Sun May 28, 2006 4:32 pm

Hi everyone,

On my Aunt Jessie's death registration from 7/12/1920 my grandfather Andrew McGowan is down as being a Seaman Merchant Services, the family lived at 8 Silverbanks Street, Cambuslang. How would I go about finding his service records. :?: :?: :?:

Many thanks,
Audrey

Thank you Tracey,

Sadly no he was born in Kirkmuirhill, Lesmahagow 9/4/1884 and vanished of the face of the earth in 1920. Jessie's death registration is the first proper clue I have had. He did not die in Scotland and after finding Jessie's death cert I wondered if he died on ship or even jumped ship.

regards,
Audrey

Death at Sea

Post by Alcluith » Sun May 28, 2006 6:09 pm

Audrey,

If Andrew McGowan died at sea he will be in the Register of Deaths at Sea, a copy of these are held in the Mitchell Library. So maybe a ticket for the Tombola will get you a search in the Mitchell 4th prize

I done a quick look on the Minor Records on ScotlandsPeople between 1900 & 1922 and there are two returns for an Andrew mcGowan so maybe a look there first to see if either of them are your Andrew if you have not already done that.

Hi Drew and Tracey,

Have been looking for Andrew for three years now and in desperation I paid for a full search of deaths in Scotland as at the time I was unable to get up to NRH, the outcome of the paid search was that he had not died in Scotland, then sometime later being the doubting Thomas that I am I had a search done while visiting new found cousins in Lesmahagow and nothing was found either. There are a fair few Andrew's in the family and I have found them on SP but sadly not mine.

Thank you for your help,
regards,
Audrey
