Hello here is Maggie64
I would like to ask you for wee help to find out more information on seaman Edward Brannan who was lost in Southern Ocean on August 26 1858 aged 29,
he was married to Mary Middleton in Montrose. I have no idea if his ship was from Dundee or Montrose or other places. I have tried to find out more about his ship and anything information on him but no luck.
I found out about this from Montrose Library that they found an entry in the pre-1855 gravestone inscriptions of Montrose that reads:
by Edwd Brannan, seaman lost in the Southern Ocean 26 August 1858 age 29, wife in memory of father, Edward died 23 April 1851 aged 55, mother Isabella Rae died 7 October 1864, father in law Lewis Middleton died 25 march 1855 aged 67, daughter Isabella died 6 September 1855 aged 6 months. " Lair 256 at Rosehill cemetry in Montrose.
Please let me know if you know anything about his ship or what happened to Edward Brannan,? Please contact me thank you Margaret from Canada

Dear Maggie
I hope you find some help from the folk on this site - they are really extremely good, especially to new members.
I've had a quick look on the IGI and found this:-
1. ISABELLA RAE BRANNAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 06 DEC 1854 Montrose, Angus, Scotland
2. EDWARD BRANNAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 17 MAY 1857 Montrose, Angus, Scotland
If you've not got a note of them, I think they are likely to be two children of your Mary Middleton and Edward Brannan.
I also searched for marriages and I think the second one will likely be "yours".
1. EDWARD BRANNON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 25 MAR 1856 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. EDWARD BRANNAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Marriage: 12 DEC 1852 Montrose, Angus, Scotland
(I apologise if you already know all this!)
Coming from the area that he does, Edward may well have been sailing on a whaling ship. I don't know how you would confirm that, but if you are patient, someone else on this site will come along and tell us. I watched a programme on TV the other night about whaling and Dundee and the area around it had a number of ships involved in the trade, and they sailed to the Southern Ocean.
Be patient - someone who knows more about this WILL come along and help you.
Can I suggest you look at the 1851 Census on the Scotland's People site. You might well find them there.
Good luck!
Liz

Hi Liz
Thank you for your reply that I really appreciate it very much.
Edward Brannan was brother of my ggg grandfather James Brannen (Brannan).
Thank you for information on Edward Brannan and Mary Middleton's children Isabella Rae and Edward.
I do hope that someone will find information on Edward Brannan and his ship in 1858.
I have no idea if he went on whaling ship, but I do agree with you that he might went sailing on whaling ship for his job to earn some money for his family in Montrose.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Margaret
Have you done any searching for info about whaling ships? If you type Dundee whaling into Google you'll get about 18,000 sites to check - refine your search further and you will be able to find out a bit of background to the whaling industry in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s.
Here's a couple of links to get you started:-
http://www.historyshelf.org/secf/danger/09.php
http://www.explorenorth.com/whalers/fea ... tains1.htm
http://www.dundee.ac.uk/museum/blue/exhibition2.htm
http://gdl.cdlr.strath.ac.uk/scotia/goo ... nt0702.htm
I also typed this combination into Google and got 394 links, so you might want to try that first and see what you find.
whaling 1800s scotland "southern ocean"
All the best.

Lost in Southern Ocean 1858
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that I finally got answers about my ggg grandfather's brother Edward Brannan who was seaman who was lost in Southern Ocean on August 26 1858.
He was sailing from Liverpool on the ship " Himalaya " and the ship was going to India and Shi Maurits, the ship captain was R. Alexander, the ship owners were Mackie, its home port was Montrose, Scotland. That was the place where my ancestors lived from 1830's to 1860's. The captain did not registered my ggg grandfather's brother's death until the ship came back to British waters in 1859.
The records can be found at Kew, the home of the National Archives.
cherrio for now,
Margaret
