Steamships - James McDonald

Post by Pandabean » Tue Dec 26, 2006 11:56 am

Would there be any records out there for crew of Steamships in the mid 1800s (abt 1850 - 1860)? From the information below would he likely be stoking the engines below deck?

This McDonald family lived in the Lanarkshire area from appx 1850 onwards, prior to that James was back on the Isle of Skye.

I am hoping that there may be a record of James McDonald (Gx3 Grandfather) as some of you may know I have been having trouble with James in the fact that he disappears of the earth with his wife and leaves his children with the grandparents.

On the certificates his occupation is given slightly different each time.

In the 1851 census (the only census I can find with James on it and he is in Barony, Glasgow) he is a Steam Engine Keeper and living with his wife and first son.

Their son Alexander was born 1856 and James' occupation is given as Stoker in a Steam (Unknown). I have uploaded this cert to the gallery to see if anyone can make out the last word. With the birth of their first daughter in 1859 James is a Labourer.

In 1885 when Alexander marries Margaret Adamson his father's occupation is Steamship Fireman. When Alexander dies his father's occupation is Ships Stoker.

With James' son James his occupation is fireman in 1879 and seamen in 1936 when he dies.

I would say he was a stoker in a steam vessel.

All the best,

Hugh, I had a quick look but was unable to find him. There was on Jame McDonald between 1850 and 1860 and he was a passenger.
