Trawlermen

Post by Rach » Mon Jan 22, 2007 10:04 pm

Have just got over my sea-sickness after watching 'Trawlermen' a wee while ago. I always prided myself on being a good sailor having fishing ancestors as far back as the early 1700's so far. However, after watching that documentary I see that I haven't been tested! I wouldn't be able to their job for anything. When I was young I remember my grandfather's fingers being all puffed up with being out at sea in almost all weathers.
In my collection of old photos I have one taken in the cabin of the boat - a wee bit more primitive than the boats of today!
I have always appreciated the fish I eat and it is good to see a documentary like this keeping the dangers they face to the fore.

How right you are, Rach. We too easily forget the true cost of the fish we eat.

Best wishes

My mother taught me to sing (here approximately and from memory) -

Wha'll buy my caller herrin, they're bonnie fish and halesome farin
Buy my caller herrin, new drawn frae the Forth
Wha'll buy my caller herrin, they're no brought here wi-out brave darin
Wives an mithers, maist despairing, ca them lives o men.

Read somewhere they had the highest mortality rate for some of the lowest wages out of any occupation.
