Hi from New Zealand
I have a gg grandfather married at sea on the "Strathfieldsaye" 1858. They were in NZ waters but the marriage is no where to be found here in NZ.
They started their journey in Glasgow but their marriage is not on Scotland's People.
I contacted NAS but have had no reply.
The ship was registered in London and in 1858 was owned by W Connal.
There were heaps of problems on board during the voyage and the Captain (Brown) was taken to court in NZ but skipped the country before the end of the trial. hopefully not with the records.
Any sugestions would be great.
I am traveling to Scotland and time will be far too short to not have it planned to the inth.
Thanks in advance
Janet

Marriage at sea 1858
Hi Lesley
My gg grandfather was James Ketchen son of Andrew and Beatrice and he stated he was from Toxide.
He married Marion Brown daughter of John Brown and Marion Kerr and she stated she was from Leadburn.
I know they were married at sea from a diary written on board by a passenger and have the passenger list showing they embarked as single folk.
I am at the stage where I will try anything .
Regards Janet

Hi Janet
First off I AM NOT THE MAP EXPERT around here
Now that said....I've had a wee play with a new gadget and captured a map image to show you.
I think Toxside (or at least according to my Gazetteer) was situated about 7 miles SW of Gorebridge in Midlothian. So I studied my trusty old parish map of Midlothian and there is a Tockside just about where they said it would be. I guess spelling doesn't count!! Anyhow....it's very possible this is the place your grgr originated from. Just look to the very bottom left and you'll see the town almost on the border. It looks to be in Temple Parish and isn't far at all from the Peebleshire border. I'd post a full scale map but it would be over my gallery quota
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1189
Not only this but I'm pretty sure Leadburn was just a a few miles away...perhaps in Peebleshire or perhaps still in Midlothian...not certain on that.
I'm guessing this points a finger to the fact that they likely had met prior to setting sail....and maybe planned the wedding weeks in advance.
Unfortunatley I'm still scratching my head on the parent names and not finding a sure bet in either 1841 or 1851 census....yet.
I'm sure the real map experts will be up and at things before too long.
Hope you find this helpful
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Janet,
Toxside is about 3 miles (or 5 km if you prefer) south-east-ish of Leadburn. Leadburn is on the Peebles-shire / Midlothian boundary, mostly in Midlothian. If the place you are looking for is in Mildothian, then it will be in Penicuik parish. If it is in Peebles-shire, then it probably in Newlands Parish, but with a possibility of Eddleston Parish.
Toxside is in Midlothian, by about a mile. Jean has placed Toxside corectly in Temple Parish.
To see them on the 1890s parish map:
Go to http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... _list.html
Select Sheet 24 - Peebles
Click on the portion of Penicuik Parish (yellow-coloured) on the top edge of the map, just east of centre until you can read the place names. You will find Leadburn there.
Move a short distance eastwards into Temple Parish (coloured blue). You will find Toxside under the T of Temple.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Janet
As to the marriage at sea, hmm... no obvious sign on SP as you have said. As far as I'm aware notification of such a marriage would have to be registered after the event.
I found this, which you have probably checked already:
http://www.theshipslist.com/Forms/marriagesatsea.html
but no mention of your couple. IGI seems to turn up nothing either, even their "at sea" option.
http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/res ... datsea.htm
states:
However, that does not explain why there appears to be no mention at SP...
Best wishes

http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/res ... datsea.htm
states:
The Family Records Centre (FRC) holds indexes to records of births and deaths at sea from 1837. These 'Marine Registers' can be found on the ground floor of the FRC. See the General Register Office website for a full list of their holdings.
The FRC also holds a set of microfilms containing records of births, marriages and deaths at sea. These microfilms can be found on the first floor of the FRC and comprise records held by The National Archives (TNA) in records series: BT158, BT159 & BT160. (Each links to The National Archives catalogue entry.)
They cover the years 1854 to 1891 and include events reported to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen (RGSS). The births and deaths include Scottish and Irish citizens and foreign nationals, as well as those from England and Wales.
Have you already looked here for a mention? The RGSS sent a copy of the birth or death entry to the appropriate General Register Office. Events concerning persons normally resident in Ireland would have been sent to Dublin, those for Scottish residents to Edinburgh and those from England or Wales, and foreign nationals, to London.
However, that does not explain why there appears to be no mention at SP...
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Janet,
I had a look on FindMyPast for the marriage at sea, but nothing is showing for them.
