I am just wondering if anyone can give me any advice. I have been searching for information about my grandfather who spent time in a catholic orphanage in Glasgow in the early 1900s. I have contacted the Glasgow City Archives who put me in touch with the Glasgow RC Archdiocese Archives who then passed me onto the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul who hold records for Smyllum Orphanage. The told me they only hold records of admissions from 1906 so have no record of him, however I am not even sure he was in Smyllum. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to proceed?

Have you found your grandfather in the 1901 census?
Was he with his family then? Or in an institution of some sort? A look at the header page of the census may yield clues if he was in care then.
