130 Parson Street Glasgow

Does anyone know if there was a hospital/poorhouse at Parson Street Glasgow, it's not listed in the Workhouse website.

I certainly haven't heard of one at that address but that doesn't mean there isn't.

What year are you wondering about?

In the 1851 there is a Thomas family living there.
A look at the 1891 census on Ancestry shows an Elizabeth Henderson, caretaker living there. Is this why you are asking?

If so then a look at the record on SP will give you more info and a look at the 'header page' will tell you if there was an institution enumerated.

Was it from the 1860’s? If so:

In 1863-64, according to this Post Office Directory, 130 Parson Street was the location of the Magdalene Institution Home whose office was at 3 Bath Street. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=Feg ... 22&f=false

It seems they moved to new premises at Lochburn in 1864. The Royal Charter mentioned dates from 1859. Its purpose was to get vulnerable young women off the streets. http://www.theglasgowstory.com/image.php?inum=TGSG00036

Most of them were orphans.

Thanks for responding to my query. John Tait McLean died at 130 Parson Street Glasgow in 1881, described as a Pauper, so thought there may have been some sort of an institution there at that time.

Hello Aileen

In Scotland one did not need to actually go into the poorhouse to receive help. You could live outside but receive help from the parish and woul be described as a pauper. This, I understand, was not the case in England and Wales but that is enlightened Scotland for you!
