Looking for details of Alexander Royan (born 1799) who was sentenced to 7 years transportation in 1821. The last date I can trace him to is April 1821 when he was held in Inverness Prison.
I believe at that time the place for tansportation of prisoners was Australia and Tasmania. I can find no trace of Alexander on any convict list.
Would he have sailed from a Scottish Port?
The closest I have found is Alexander Roan who died in Tasmania in 1824 aged 24. Age fits. Alexander Roan was in the Army, 3rd Regiment, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment). Could a convict sentenced to transportation have joined the Army as an alternative "punishment".
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thank you

Is this your Alexander ?
RefNo AD14/21/129 Precognition against Alexander Royan for the crime of theft by housebreaking 1821 found on NAS web site ?
Scottish Trial Records
Court papers for Scottish convicts are available from the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. The date and place of trial needs to be supplied and they will give a quote ..............................

So there was no mention of his transportation at NAS ?

Alexander Royan
Thanks for taking the time to reply. I should have mentioned in my message that I do have the court papers you mention and also the papers when Alexander was transferred from Elgin Prison to Inverness Prison in April 1821 after this date I cannot find him. I have searched convict lists to no avail. I am now considering hiring someone to search National Archives in England to see if they can find him on any convict ships lists.
Once again many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Hello Irene
I have noticed that all ive read on Scottish convicts i havent found one yet that does say where they would have sailed from or maybe i just havent found the right site yet !
I am off to TNA soon i hope. I havent been before so havent a clue how long things take to look through. I wish i could say i can look for you but until i build up my confidence there i dont think its a wise offer

Alexander Royan
I have made enquiries regarding researchers for TNA they charge around £20 per hour but hopefully it will be worth it if they come up with the information.
I have done a fair bit of research for Alexander and cannot find a death or marriage for him in Scotland so I "think" he probably was transported.
Good luck with your trip to TNA. Are you in Scotland?
I am in Nairn near Inverness.

Hi Irene
Im south of the boarder
TNA is only a short tube ride from my work but it seems the closer you are the harder it is to find the time to go.
Wish you well with your researcher and hope you get a fast reading one

P.S
applogies for going slightly off subject but did you see a tv programe a short while ago about convicts buriels (in Australia) and their grave stones ? I cant remember what it was called ( this time of night can barely remember my own name) But i seem to remember them saying that convicts stones werent marked so its hard for anyone researching to find convicts graves.
Just a thought.................
Goodnight
