Hairst Street, Renfrew.....

Post by marva » Tue Jan 11, 2005 3:02 am

Can anyone tell me if on Hairst Street, Renfrew the possible name of a hospital there. My mother was born there 1902, and my great aunt died there in 1946. On Google I found it called "Ayrshire Central Hospital". Was that what it was back then.

Hmmmm.... Ayrshire Central Hospital, from the time that I've known of it, is some 20 miles to the south of Renfrew in Irvine..........

We need input from someone who knows Renfrew.

I can't think of any hospital in Renfrew , never mind Hairst street :?

Are you sure it was a hospital and not the house ? most people were born and died at home - I was [ born that is - still very much alive  ] and that wasn't THAT long ago!

I worked for Argyll & Clyde Health Board but can't think of anything at all .

Hi Marva,

The old DG at Scotlandspeople had a query a few months ago about, i think, the possibility of a hospital at, again i think, the address 77 Hairst St.

The consensus, as far as i remember, being that there wasn't one. Your mother would be more likely to be born in her parents' house. A look at the 1901 census film would give what families were living at the address on your mother's BC.

You'll find some photies at these links - there doesn't appear to be room for a hospital!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for your help. It was 77 Hairst St, that my mom was born in 1902, I know they lived on Glen Crescent with my grandparents when my brother was born until 1935 when they came to Canada and then USA. The 1901 census does me no good as my grandparents were married 31 Dec. 1901 (census already taken, which I have) and my mom was born 9 Nov. 1902. Just thought it may be a hospital since my great aunt died on Hairst St. (do not know number) in 1946.

Hi Marva,

Good to hear from you. I notice a Renfrew Historic Society about half way down the page at -

http://www.renfrew.org.uk/contacts/community.php

There is an e-mail contact to a Nancy Roy. Maybe as a member of the Society she will know more of the town's history. No harm in asking - you never know!
