Inverness.....

What was at 82 Old Edinburgh Road, Inverness in 1934. One of my rellies died there and I noticed on the extract of the death reg that someone else died there a couple of days after. Was it some sort of hospital or a poorhouse? Both of them had their usual residence given as well.
Cheers

Hi Annpa
I wonder if this is it? - correct road, but number not given..

Inverness poorhouse was later known as Muirfield Institution. In 1946, an official report noted that the building had narrow central corridors and poorly lit but well ventilated wards. Its accommodation then included 54 beds for the chronic sick, 3 maternity beds, a nursery ward for 6 children, and places for certified mental patients. Under the National Health Service, the Institution became Hilton Hospital.
The buildings have now been converted into flats.

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley
Thanks so much
It looks like it could have been the poorhouse. - so many of my dear departed left this life in the poorhouse, wherever in Scotland it might be.
Cheers

I had a look at the old maps site, put in "Old Edinburgh Road, Inverness " as the address and picked number 80.

The map centred on the address - and sure enough in the enlarged view that turned out to be the Poorhouse!

However, bear in mind that that was 1874, the death you are reffering to was in 1934 60 years later - a long time in health and social care etc.

Many of these places were taken over and converted into hospitals - though often the outside didn't change that much, and the old name remained in the memory of the older folk :(

The building would have been at the west side of the road at the junction between Old Edinburgh Road and Damfield Road.

Perhaps the Highland Health board archives would shed some light on when it was changed from a poorhouse ? or anyone with more local knowledge?

Hi Annpa and Wilma,

On the 1932 Ordnance Survey map, it is still shown as the poorhouse.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
