Poor Law dates.....

Post by Tracey » Wed Feb 15, 2006 2:33 pm

Poor Law dates on The Mitchell
Glasgow, 1851-1948
Barony, 1861-1898 (when it united with Glasgow)
Would it have united at the end of the year 1898 ? and are these records relatively easy to search - having never done it myself  .

Thanks

Tracey

Hello Tracey,

Although the above dates are given not all the books survived and there is a closure of 75 years on the records.

The search criteria are - Surname + maiden if a married female, first name, approximate year of and place of birth.
It's best to have an open mind when searching. The more unusual the name the easier they will be to find in the index.

Hope this helps,
Annette M

I wasnt hinting just going to add it to the list for my "auntie" honest but didnt want to make it difficult for her  .
Quite simple really :? .

Helen Casey miss Fox born England and depending on which cert to believe birth year c 1875. In 1898 she is at East Rose Street Calton Glasgow.

If this is her on 1901 census she is head 26 Crownpoint Rd Barony Glasgow. Also if a census i found for her husband Francis Casey is correct he is in Prison which could explain the long gap between childrens births. My thought is IF this is him in prison she may have had to apply for poor relief ?

Many thanks

Hello Tracey,

The application started off in the name of Francis but he was ill so it carried on as Helen's.

Address - 10 Annfield St Date - 5/4/06
Born - Salford, Manchester.
Age 28, Married, Prot.

Married Moncur Street 7th May 1897 by Rev. Halliday - Calton 210/1897

Disablement - suckling a baby.

Parents - Richard Fox, City Porter and Elizabeth Bullen b/d.

Francis Casey born Ipswich, 38 Mason's labourer died Royal Infirmary 11/4/6. Son of John Casey, Showmaker?? and Ann Philips both dead.

Children - Helen 7 born 12 E. Rose St. 28/5/98
Doris 3 weeks born 10 Annfield St 13/3/1906

Husband in no society was ill 6 weeks prior to going to hospital where he died yesterday 11/4/6.
Pension of 30/- per quarter from N.G. Artillery- This she stoutly denied until I practically had to tell her I knew it.
2 brothers in Paisley are going to try to bury.
This woman has not shown herself to be straightforward and states she was told to mislead us with info.

Residences - Present 1yr. 8 mths
26 Crownpoint Road 4 years
12 E. Rose St. 1 year

There was a list of payment details (including a little drunken episode)till.............
1.7.08 off roll married.

It should copy well if you want the actual record.

I'd be interested to know what John Casey did for a living. It looked like Showmaker to me.

Regards,
Annette M

Oh my........... Annette !!

Your a star and found another baby !!! but she must have died. John was a plain old shoemaker athough possibly a good showman in drunker moments.
