Poor Relief Application.....

I was wondering if anyone is at the Mitchell in the next few days whether they could possibly have a check to see if one of my relatives applied for ppor relief ?

Her name was MARGARET STRANG and she was born in 1824 in Doune, Perthshire. Her husband died in 1862 folowing a fall from a horse (he was a carter) and she was left with 3 children under six to bring up. Her parents were dead and she had no siblings, so I don't know how she would manage if she didn't apply. The family was living at 101, King St, Govan at the time.

Hope that's enough info to search with.

Hopefully I will be going tomorrow Caroline and I'll have a look.

Having both maiden and married names helps to cross check.

Hello Are poor relief applications separate from the poor house records.The reason I ask is that records for Dunfermline do not exist but if applications are recorded separately I might find a little about what I want to know.

It all depends on where they were originally stored. I can well imagine a situation where the local Board meeting minutes, and poorhouse administrative records ended up in a separate office from the location where the poor inspectors' reports were stored.

And that situation could easily have been further complicated by the near 100 years since the last records were created, and many changes in local authority structures since then.

I can imagine a situation where the poorhouse admin records for Auchenshugle Combination Poorhouse ended up in one modern local authority's library/archive, but the poor inspectors' report for some at least the parishes involved in the Auchenshugle Combination ended up elsewhere.

In this context it should be noted that some libraries are not familiar with poor relief records and are not always fully knowlegable about what they have, i.e. they know that they have some Poor Relief material but don't know exactly what is the content.

Hi Malcolm,

I also had relatives in Dunfermline Poorhouse and I contacted Andrew Dowsey last year regarding the records. He said that no records survived for the Poorhouse itself, but if I went to Dunfermline Library I would find some poor relief applications amongst the parochial board records. I haven't followed this up yet, but it might be worth contacting them.

Hello Caroline,

I'm afraid I couldn't find a poorhouse application from Margaret Strang/McLaren.

Perhaps you'll know if these two were related.
John Strang born Doune 1823 applied in 1897. D-HEW 15/4/19 page 5946
Andrew Strang born Doune 1822 applied in 1870. D-HEW 14/42 page 30606.
Andrew Strang born Doune 1826 (I wonder if these two are the same person) applied in 1889. D-HEW 10/1/79 page 300.

I couldn't look as production had stopped for the day.

Thanks for taking the trouble to look anyway.

I can only assume that her husbands family helped her out, although I;ve failed to discover any info about them so far!

The other Strangs don't ring a bell , but I'll keep a note of the names - you never know what will turn up in the future.
