Hullo,
I have a Death in the District of Irvine in the County of Ayr.
1870.
Matthew Cargin.
Married: Male. Age: -
Died: 25 May, 1870.
His parent's names are Unknown to Informant.
Question: Is there any other place I might be able to get any extra information about Matthew?
There are several Matthew Cargins & I have information on some of them.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
I am researching in Australia.
Kind regards,
Pat B.

Hi Pat
The only idea I can come up with is that you have a look back through the Census, 1861 and 1851 on www.ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk and the 1841 on http://freecen.rootsweb.com for the Matthew Cargin s. The name doesn't appear to be a common one. However I would advise using wild cards.
For the 1861 Census, I got 1 hit by using Matt* C*rg*n.
Best wishes

Matthew Cargin who died in Governor Nursing Home & Poor
Hullo,
Thanks for your suggestion on using Wild Card entry while looking for Matthew Cargin. The 1861 Census does have Cargin names - but they seem to "pop up" out of the blue, & then disappear completely!
I know of 2 Matthew Cargins, one is born in Saltcoats, but I can't find his birth nor baptism (c.1800) - he is my gt.gt.g/father, and he had a son named Matthew Cargin, born in 1822 in Abbey Parish, Paisley.
I know where both of them went - the father remarried after his 1st wife died & went to Australia, & the son married, (in Dublin!!!) (he was a Mariner); had 2 children in Scotland & then lived in England (where there were more children born).
So, where has this Matthew Cargin come from??? He was married, & I can't find his marriage.
Is this normal, that not all children are listed in the Parish Registers? Can you explain this to me?
I know that when I was searching for the Cargins, I found some names heavily crossed out & unreadable - with the Minister writing that the parents had not paid his fee for the baptisms!!
Thanks for your kind advice.

Parish Registers
There are cases where only females or only males for such and such a parish are to be found on the IGI at www.familysearch.com However they can be viewed on the appropriate film at an LDS Family History Centre.
Unpaid Minister
That's a new one on me, that the names were actually scored through because the fees hadn't been paid. Oh dear.
Regards

Catriona,
You keep mentioning the 1841 Census on SP. am I missing something?
Not that this is of any importance but I thought it was interesting that the Poorhouse in Skye had 3 staff members and 3 residents in the 1881 Census.

Hi Pat,
There is an online Ayrshire Poor Relief database, but seems Irvine 1870 isn't covered.
There are a few "CARGIN"s in the index - just search on surname "CAR".

As Cathy suggested, here's a list of Ayrshire Libraries - had to use TinyUrl as the link is very long.
