I'm trying to find out what happened to Jessie Ann Birnie and her sister Jane Troup Birnie, who are last heard of in this institution in the 1901 census, aged 11 and 9. I've searched SP for marriage and death records to no avail.
Could they have been adopted? If so, how would I find out?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Marilyn
See
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4822
for information about adoptions in Scotland. If, as you suspect these two may have been adopted well before 1930, it may be very difficult, if not almost impossible, to trace them.
If neither of them married, or both left the country (and maybe married outwith Scotland?) , or both married after 1930 in Scotland, or both died after 1955 then there will be no sign of them on Scotland's People. They may turn up one of these days... I have several who go missing around then as well, so can sympathise.
Not much encouragement - sorry!!
Best wishes
Lesley
