Regarding the rents, that's a lot of people paying rent. Were they all in the one building? That would suggest they do refer to the tenements on Pollokshaws Road, in which case they would probably be opposite ends of the same building.
I couldn't see the photo, by the way.

The post was from sometime back so the picture was removed to make way for newer images. Certainly does seem a lot of folk for one building, but that is as it is listed in his will - maybe the numbering was quite different then, as you suggested.... I guess a browse in the 1871 census would catch at least some of the same names and maybe shed some light on the situation.
hmmm...off to have a look at the 1881!!
