Hi Mary
I just cut and copied the occupation from the post into the Ancestry search for each census year till I got a hit.
Ah, that explains it. Thanks for that.
Confession time; shh...
...I hardly ever use Ancestry. No sub. Have taken out one of those 48hr or whatever ones about twice to collect the a few things I wanted, but that's it.

Which explains why I missed the blinking obvious, 'cos not being very familiar with it, I would not have thought of searching it in that way.

Any chance of someone uploading that image so we can see the text in question? Someone might have a brainwave! (but at this rate it seems unlikely that it will be me!)

Best wishes
Lesley

I've uploaded it to the "deciphering" album.

Hi Sarah
Fitting with the agricultural setting, that sounds like a very sensible and quite probably accurate representation of the said scribble! Well done.
...And its light years ahead of anything I was managing tonight.

Best wishes

Attagirl Sarah!

Looking at it again after reading your post - it's got to be that.

 8)

Wow What can I say, I knew someone on TS would be able to help and you all turned up trumps AGAIN.

"Feeding the Poultry" sounds much better, than my last option also fits very nicely with their farming.

Ancestry versus SP, I do prefare SP but the cost for Oz conversion rates on this site is $20 for 30 credits, considering you only get 5 paid views for that, it isn't much, I am not knocking it as I have so far spent over $2000 on this site just to get my Scottish Ancestry which is very dear to me.

Ancestry, well yes they leave a lot to be desired as my original question shows, :!:

Once again thank you ALL so very much for your help & solution.

Trish

That sort of expenditure sends cold shivvers up my spine. (although it could have something to do with the weather)

From a statistical point of view it would be interesting to hear of what others are spending on ScotlandsPeople and what percentage of that expenditure is on 'wrong' certificate or census images.

My own census 'failure rate' on ScotlandsPeople is substantially higher than that on Ancestry and I believe this is because of the far superior search facility on Ancestry.

I imagine that many people would not be able to research their Scottish history in any detail because of the cost.

If ScotlandsPeople and GROS and the Scottish Government have any interest at all in the spread of Scottish culture surely it would be better to have more people spending less than less people spending more without affecting the bottom line.

A good start in this direction would be the removal of the 1 credit search impost which would reduce the failure rate, increase the value for money of the product being delivered and make the whole process less of a gamble.

 Oh! Mammy!

I've just calculated

90 pages of searches and 50 pages of viewed images!

That means I've probably spent approximately £1700 on SP since January 2005.
  • 1. No way do I want to know how many of them were "wronguns"

    2. Ah'm no tellin ma weans where their inheritance is goin

Oh Dear

Mary's calculation has now made me realise it is a LOT more than I first thought :-k As I have 5 pages in my "timeline" and 13 pages of viewed pages, plus umpteen "previous searches I only paid 1 credit for.

This is only on the Scottish side, I am also tracing Feeneys in Ireland, and family in England, I think maybe I should [comp-hammer] .

Well you can't take it with you, but it would have paid for a trip the the Bonney Isle sometime :?:

Great to talk to you all

I dont want to calculate what I have spent on SP, I have about 16 pages of viewed images  How many of them are duds I can feel the tears welling. As I had a look yesterday for some stuff and realised that a good number of my views when I started this caper were wrong uns. If I was to delete those I am worried how many would be left
