Mining

Have finally found one of my ancestors working as a miner in Bothwell Park in 1901.
Not having any ancestors working in this profession I am interested in finding out a wee bit about the place he worked etc.
His name was Hugh Manson, born in Tongue Sutherland c 1849 and died in
Omen(?) House, Cleland Lanark in 1925. Was this a home for miners? This wasn't his usual residence.

One slight hiccup is that in the 1901 census he is down as being a US citizen although it would be quite possible as several members of the family emigrated, mainly to Canada.

Hi there,

If you look at mining-villages.co.uk or mcpitz.com, you'll probably find a lot of information that will give you an idea of what life was like and there might be some specific information about Bothwell Park. I've found a few relations listed on the first site as well as a lot of contemporary reports about the conditions the miners faced.

Regarding your ancestor's death in Cleland, I'm not sure about this, but it might be that Hugh had taken ill, become infirm or had fallen on hard times, as I think the place in Cleland where he died might have been Omoa, which was one of the poorhouses for the Lanarkshire area. The site workhouses.org.uk has more information on these places.

I wasn't sure of the spelling of the place he died so that sounds right.
