I am looking for details for Peter Ballantyne who was a manufacturer in Glasgow. On his daughters (Euphemia Boyd Ballantyne) OPR record for her marriage to John Bruce in 26-05-1828 it stated that he was manufacturer in Glasgow and was deceased. Does anyone know how I can find out what he manufactured?

Hi McBrucie
Glasgow Post Office Directory for 1828-29. Glasgow: printed by John Graham and Co., 1828.
There are earlier ones too.
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... centre.htm
Some of the PO directories are available on CDs too so you may be able to view it if a local FHS has it?
...long shot but any chance Euphemia might have survived until after 1855 and is there any chance her death informant migth have given a bit more details on her father's occupation. Maybe worth a look if you have not covered this angle already.
Other thing perhaps to try is to find her and her siblings births or christenings in the OPRs in the hope that the session clerk recorded occupations - some did, many didn't.
Best wishes
Lesley
PO Directories? One does exist for that year. You can probably view a copy at the Mitchell Library I expect. On his daughters (Euphemia Boyd Ballantyne) OPR record for her marriage to John Bruce in 26-05-1828

Later - I've just noticed the address Castlehill same as Patrick's so there is no doubt these are his relations. Whether or not he's Euphemia's father/ brother or otherwise is another story

I have just checked her death entry...and she did survive after 1855! She died in 1863 and it does give her fathers occupation (kind of!) it just says "________ manufacturer" (yes it shows just a line!). I will have a look at the Mitchell later on in the month when I om off for a few days.
Thanks again

His name was shown as Peter, do you think that he still might be down as Patrick? I have not found any siblings for Eupemia yet....
I seem to have got the bug again after watching "who do you think you are" tonight again. I see Fiona Bruce is on in this series,,,,,fingers crossed she is related to my Bruces' and the BBC have found everything I haven't!

Mmm maybe not then - the family at Castlehill - mother's name was Mary Taylor. Strangely enough they had a daughter Euphemia born in 1801.
Patrick and Peter are interchangeable and I noticed Euphemia gave Patrick as a middle name for one of her sons which is why I checked for Patrick in the wills.
Regards,
Annette
