Police constables - Glasgow

Hello again to everyone...

I have two ancestors who were police constables in Glasgow in 1901 ( Alexander S Innes and James Hay Innes; both born Drumblade, Aberdeenshire)

Alexander died in the Influenza epidemic in 1919 having risen to be a Police Inspector.

James is a Cycle mechanic by the time his wife dies in 1910 - and then emigrates to Canada around 1912/13. He seems to do very well out there....

Is there any way I can find out why he left the police force?

They have Archives at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow-there is a 75 year exclusion though so nothing pre 1935 http://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/libraries ... fault.aspx
I have seen them as somebody who was searching out her Father's records let me have a look.The records were pretty extensive including details of wages,extra cash-for stopping runaway horses,rescuing from drowning or from a burning building-I think the runaway horse fee was 10s!
Looks like the periods you are looking at will be accessible

Yes worth a day in Glasgow just to visit the Archives.I have spent many a happy hour there.

Quick update - Finally got to the Mitchell and found the police archive records for my ancestors. Lots of info re addresses and personal info re promotions etc, but James appears to have just resigned with no reason given...? He was doing quite well too, with a couple of certificates and awards - and no negative comments at all ( and no drink, which appears to be quite unusual in the 1900s policeman!) so I am no further forward with my original quest....the only thing I can think of was that his new wife did not like the risks and dangers that the occupation brought....?

But it was a good day out with info found on not just James but his brother the police inspector too...

Maybe the hours were too disruptive to a newly married life or perhaps he was overshadowed by big brother's success.
They are beautifully kept records aren't they? Very interesting background to a working life.
Not surprised they were "Heighlanders" it seems that you had to be a Gaelic speaker if you wanted to be a Policeman in many parts of Glasgow particulary around Partick Cross.I gues the mass migration from the Highlands to the Lowlands brought it's influx of "foreign immigrants" to Glasgow-many of my kin amongst them.

I had to pay £25 to learn from the Police about my grandfather who was doing well here in the police force when he came over from N.I at the turn of the last centure in 1900 or 01 he lived in Mackinfauld road with my granny but after three years in the force he was thrown out for misbehaviour... nice eh. paying £25 to learn that haha, they sent me three documents like birth certs.. with all the dates and details..

James Hay Innes was my great grandfather. The reason that I understand for him leaving the police force is because he got married. In those days married men were frowned upon in the police force. Most men were single and they lived in designated barracks for their station. Married men were not allowed to live in the barracks. It was for that reason he left the police force.

In a little over two years he was promoted to a First Class Constable and had made some interesting arrests - he had apprehended a women for sheebeening (making illegal alcohol), and also a bookmaker. He received monetary rewards of 5 schillings for each arrest.
