Mercers

Sandilands, Johnston & Co - Mercers

Appear for the first time in the 1851 Edinburgh & Leith Directory and then disappear.

Would the "& Co" mean they were a limited company as we know one to be today? If so, would any records still exist?

I've tried a google search but alas I have not been able to find out more about them.

I can't find "Mercer" listed separately in the Directories either, just this company at a Street address. Does anyone have an idea what exactly a mercer was in 1851?

Thanks
Sandy

Hi,
what exactly a mercer was in 1851?
A mercer (occupation) is a merchant or trader, more specifically a merchant who deals in textiles / mercery.
Some one who dealt with Fabrics / Threads /Materials .

Thanks momat :)

That fits in nicely with my other post:

Wish there were company records from that era.

Hello Sandy,

There’s a bit of light reading about Scottish companies and partnerships in “Manual of the Law of Scotland” published 1847.
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=pYM ... J&pg=PA176

Here’s some information about company registration in Scotland. http://www.nas.gov.uk/about/060815.asp

Occasionally you see dissolution of partnerships in the Edinburgh Gazette. I had a bit of a look for yours but nothing jumped out at me.

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Alan.

If only they had registered 5 years later we could of found them :-({|=
