Profession or Occupation.....

Post by Annieboag » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:32 pm

Hello knowledgeable people! :)
In an 1891 Census return I have Peter Boag, Govan Glasgow. His occupation is listed as what appears to be "Passenger In Shunter"
2 Images leap to mind, stranded commuter on night of census or Hong Kong Underground shoehorning extra passengers in... :D
What do you think it really means ?

Hi Annie

Since you use the phrase "appears to be", I wondered if it might be worth your while to upload the image to the gallery? Someone else might have ideas about what is actually written.

Best wishes

Hi Annie

I would say "Passenger Train Shunter". There are the letter Tn added between Passenger and Shunter.

He'd be the fellow who would drive the train to move or shunt it from one platform to another, when necessary.

Best wishes

Annie

Do you know where they married ? There is a marriage of a Janet Falconer in Canongate, Edinburgh in June 1823 (from IGI) and it is just about possible to imagine the first letter as an 'F' The rest resembles a doctor's prescription!!!
You might have to wait until a few sightings have been made to get a concensus.
