More Squiggly Writing...

Post by Tusker » Fri Mar 10, 2006 5:43 am

For those of the eagle eyes......I've uploaded a part page (because I was told the whole page is too big, and exceeds my limit) of a birth certificate for Catherine Adams.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-439

Can anyone read what John Adams occupation is? I can read "Labourer en-gaged in felling\filling\falling..........." Thanks!

Tusker

"Labourer engaged at felling for ag-Con" ... could be "ag-Conr"..... "agricultural contactor" ??

David

Later ... how did I write "involved" when it's clearly "engaged" ?!

Hi Tusker
I see
"Labourer - engaged at felling" then what looks like "prog-con" but could be "for ?-Con" or "pr- ? Con"
Its not so easy with only part of the page as there are fewer letters to compare with the difficult bit.

Any indication of thsi chap's occupation on any other document so we could put it in context?

Best wishes
Lesley

I read 'labourer engaged in felling' .

The rest looks like 'Br (ink spot) g Cou'

Could it be referring to the place where he was felling or the name of the project/work scheme/employer?

Hi Lesley -- John was always a menial type of guy. He was a farm labourer back in Ireland, and a brickie's labourer at a later time, in Scotland. So I'm almost sure it doesn't read "nuclear physicist" or "trainee astronaut" :D

Can previous uploads be deleted to allow room for new uploads, or is it simply that my one file exceeds the size allowable for one upload. It's only a B & W certificate, but it says it's 1.3 megs, can you believe?

Hi Tusker

I had a wee peek in the Gallery and find that you've only uploaded to the "Difficult Handwriting" dept. As a member you are entitled to a personal gallery as well. So you should have additional space coming. I think maybe the reason your last upload took so much space was you had zoomed in on it before uploading?? Most images come through much smaller and it is up to the individual viewer to adjust the size for viewing ease. Does this make sense??? If you tell me which images you want deleted it will be made so!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hullawrerr JJ, ya wee Party Animal! :D . I was only considering deleting the O'Ryelly certificate to "make room" for the birth certificate. I'll try zooming out and then saving it, and see if that makes a difference. And I'll also try setting up a "Personal Gallery".

See me? Ah'm a member! -- an' that makes me feel right important, so it diz!....("Hey you! Get yir feet aff that chair! Ur you a member here? This area's fur members only y'know....")

Later comment: Yes, JustJean! That's done the trick it was 1.36 Megs and now it's reduced to 180kb. Quite a difference. Thanks!
I'll now try and upload the entire certificate to a "Personal Gallery"......

Well, he carried out menial work (as in working in the service of others) -- although I guess you could class that as manual too......
