Aluminium factory, Foyers.....

Post by Ian F » Sat Mar 11, 2006 5:23 pm

Can anybody point me to any records, particularly staff records, for the Foyers aluminium factory :?:

I'm interested because I know that my great grandfather, George Anderson, worked there in the early part of the 20th century.

I don't have exact dates, I'm afraid. I know that there were no Andersons in Foyers in the 1901 census, but he was definately there in 1905, when his daughter married. He's shown on the marriage certificate as a furnaceman, but I believe he eventually rose to become manager of the factory.

I'm planning a visit to Scotland in August, to pursue my investigations into my family history, and I'll be able to visit local records ofiices which might have some leads.

Thanks. :D

Hi Ian F

Welcome to TalkingScot!

See http://www.nahste.ac.uk/cgi-bin/view_is ... view=basic

Looks like you need to spend some time in Glasgow on the way north

Hi Ian F,

Sorry, I can't help you but I'll be interested to see any replies you might get as my GG Grandad died in the aluminium factory (where he worked as a furnaceman) in February 1941 with his cause of death given as "Shock, the result of enemy action". I thought this was quite interesting but haven't been able to find anything about the factory yet, never mind the bombing. Anyway, just thought I'd share that little bit of info as I haven't come across anyone else with family from that area yet :) .

Good luck, hope someone can be of more help than me!
Cat

Thanks, David! Looks like that Glasgow University archive might have just what I'm looking for.

It could be of interest to you, too, Cat. It's interesting to find someone else who has a connection with the aluminium factory, though I doubt whether your ancestor's time there coincided with mine. George Anderson was born in 1853, so if he was still alive when the Germans bombed the factory, he'd have been long since retired.

Ian

I work at the University, unfortunately not Archives, but if I can help you out before your trip, please let me know. The people in Archives are generally quite helpful.
