Is there somewhere I can research a person who I believe was a Presbyterian Minister - he went to the US from Scotland & was a Missionary & a Doctor. I believe he would have been ordained in Scotland.
How to try and find this person? Can anyone give some advice?
Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.

Hi Pat
You could try this site:
http://www.dwalker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Map.htm
Only vols 1& 2 are here though - you may need to see if you can get hold of the complete "Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" at a Library.
Best wishes
Lesley

SCOTTISH MINISTERS
The Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae
The succession of Scottish ministers in the
Church of Scotland from the Reformation,
by the Rev. Hew Scott, D.D.
The full list of the volumes of the 3rd edition are:

Which way round it is in terms of better or worse I cannot recall, but do know that the various editions differ in the amount of biographical information that they contain.
There are similar compilations of the ministers of the Free Kirk, the Episcopal Church, and one or two others, but they don't all contain the same amount of genealogically valuable biographical information.
I'll post a FAQ shortly on this and other fasti and equivalents.
David
PS In addition, try a Google, - it's surprising how often something turns up!

Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae
Hi,
Many thanks for telling me about the above books re Presbyterian Ministers, I had a look for William Cargen - in Volume 1 (available on the Internet) without success.
However, I have discovered that William Cargen studied to become a Doctor at Rush Medical College, Chicago, USA - so I wonder whether he also studied to become a Minister in the US.
He then travelled from New York, with his wife as missionaries, by boat to Milwaukee, then to Lake Ripley by team in a heavy wagon without springs.
So, he must have left Scotland reasonably early in his life (born: 1796 in Saltcoats). Would there by any records of people leaving, etc. or is this too early?
Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.
