I have a John Dalziel,35, on the 1881 Census for Barony, Lanark whose occupation is given as Master of Steamer(Canal)
Is there any way I could track this down?
I did find a website which had some names of Masters of Steamers but these seem to be going to Belfast and the dates are a bit too early.

Re: Master of Canal Steamer
You need to contact The Mitchell in Glasgow, one of the libraries in N Lanarkshire, and the City Library in Edinburgh, plus possibly the relevant FHSs, - see the contact info on this site under the relevant tabs, - in order to see what records they hold on the companies whose boats trafficked the Forth and Clyde, Union and Monkland canals.tiggersmum wrote:I have a John Dalziel,35, on the 1881 Census for Barony, Lanark whose occupation is given as Master of Steamer(Canal)

There's also near certain to be one or more societies in the UK who specialise in the history of the canals.

The London Canal Museum also has a useful family history checklist on its site here: http://www.canalmuseum.org.uk/collectio ... istory.htm
The Forth & Clyde Canal Society is here: http://www.forthandclyde.org.uk/, the Linlithgow Union Canal Society is here: http://www.lucs.org.uk/ and this site has a useful list of books about Scottish canals:

Phone in advance in case there's something that could take a while to produce for you, or in case the one librarian who's the expert is not on duty on the day of your visit.tiggersmum wrote:...snipped........We are intending to visit the Mitchell as soon as we can. My son lives in Glasgow so at least we will get a free bed for the night.
