Another to decipher.....

Post by ninatoo » Tue May 09, 2006 3:55 am

Hi all,

I have uploaded a file to the gallery and am awaiting approval for its inclusion. I am having trouble reading the occupation of Peter McCudden who married Sarah Carroll. Also I need confirmation of the mother's christian name, which I think is Isabella.

Incidentally, when I uploaded it, the drop down menu did not offer me choice about which album to upload to, so I hope it ends up in the right place.

Looking forward to help!

Nina

Hi Nina
A quick look at the occupation - it begins with a C and whatever it is, he was an apprentice! Nothing jumping out at me - would need to look at it for a while....

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Nina,
My guess is - Currier (apprentice).

Hi Nina

I think it might be Farrier (apprentice) - the first letter is the same as the F in Peter's surname - the letters for farrier fit.

Good luck

It's none of these, unless he changed occupation between the date of his marriage and the 1891 census.

As is quite often the case, a little bit of lateral thinking, and the expenditure of a few credits, - in this case for the 1891 census entry, - will save an awful lot of time :!:

Hi David
I have no wish to spark the "filter" into action, but can you please just tell us if it begins with a letter F or a letter C?

I thought it looked like the same as the C in Sacred Heart Chapel. (and in Peter McCudden's name)
the mother's christian name, which I think is Isabella
Yes, I think thats what it looks like too.
Best wishes

A "C", but the first word of the 1901 occupation, given the above proviso, has gone walkies on his marriage register entry ........... which should get you all thinking as all the suggestions so far are way, way off

Lesley, what's the filter?

Well, not wanting to spend too much money on this couple as they are a side branch (a sister of the groom of my ancestor's second marriage), I hadn't looked up census information, and probably wasn't going to. I was just asking for some new sets of eyes to look for me.

But I did spend six credits on the 1891 to find out what it was since David obviously wasn't going to just tell me, which could have saved not only time but money .

However...now I know  but if you like I will not tell yet, to see if anyone can work it out from what David has said.
