Anyone know what a sprader did?
This is given as the occupation for a 15 year old female in Dundee in the 1841 census.

I think it should probably be spreader.
I found a definition of spreader in terms of flax making which would make sense in this excellent site.
Kind regards,

Hi Caroline
Without seeing the thing in context it is difficult to think what it might be. But maybe someone else has heard of the occupation....? If she is in Dundee it may have something to do with the Jute industry.
Best wishes
Lesley
No, no idea! Are you sure that is what it says? Any chance you could upload the page to the gallery?Anyone know what a sprader did?

Hi Annette and Lesley,
I got the census entry from FreeCen so it may have been wrongly transcribed, but I think it probably should be spreader as other members of the household are flax dressers.
Very interesting site Annette.
