Railway Guard-killed Stow 1876.....

Post by joette » Fri May 26, 2006 10:54 am

Where would I find which Company a railway Guard was working for when he was killed at work in 1876 in Stow.
He was living in High St Portobello at the time.Would there be any record anywhere of this accident? There is a RCE attached to the Death Certificate which I will view at some point but would like some background
to his life/death.
He had a tragic life being orphaned at a young age & then to be killed at work & the same fate would meet his eldest brother a few years later in Coatbridge-repairing a railway bridge as the Foreman Stonemason when the jib of a crane fell on him.

Hi Joette

I can't remember off the top of my head which railway company did the Stow line but you should be able to find it on this site.
http://www.railscot.co.uk/index.htm

There were so mny takeovers and amalgamations that its hard to keep track (no pun intended)

Some of the records are in glasgow and others at NAS but some of the records from the small, early companies have not survived

Try this site. http://www.lightage.demon.co.uk/index.htm I sent for a report and it tells you the company and some details of the person (as well as the full report of the incident). In your case I expect it would give you quite a lot of info if it's there.

Thanks for that Russell & Mallog I will have a look for any relevant info.
Am off on holiday to worship at the feet of my brand-new Great-Nephew.
I have just seen my first e-mail snap of him the likeness to my nephew is uncanny(his Father's cousin) & yet his features are almost all his Mum's.

Is this him in the Scotsman, 12 September 1876?:

Railway Guard Killed at Stow
On Saturday night, about half-past eleven o'clock, the guard of the Jedburgh goods train, named Alexander Waddell, was killed between Stow and Fountainhall stations. It seems he had been in the company of the driver and stoker upon the engine of the train, and upon leaving it for his van he fell in front of the waggons. The body was frightfully mangled. The remains of the unfortunate man were conveyed same evening to Portobello, where he resided. The deceased was twenty years of age and unmarried.

Thanks for that that is him indeed. What a sad end for Alexander. Also answers where he was killed as the Death Certificate was hard to read.
Nice thing for his family to read that he was" horribly mangled"
