I belive I've seen mention of the fact that porters and carriers in Aberdeen had to be registered or certificated in some way.
How can I find out if a 3G grandparent, Joseph Nicol, was registered?
Joseph was probably born in Birse, 1794 and married Agnes Shepherd at Belhelvie in 1815. (he marries again in 1830 to Ann Duncan) At the time of his daughter Margaret's marriage in 1841 he is living in Aberdeen and is described as a Porter and in Margaret's death cert he is given as a Carrier.
He seems to die before the statutory records kick in in 1855 so I have very little information about him. I'm hoping that if there is a registration scheme it might provide a little more background.
Does anyone know of this or have access to it/

Hi Ian
I'm surprised no one has responded to your post yet.
I don't know if anyone has any access to that type of record but a starting point might be a contact with the Aberdeen Shore Porters Society which is now more of a removal and delivery firm but probably stemmed from the original portering service at the docks in Aberdeen.
Another option would be to contact any local archives in Aberdeen in case they have the records.
Yet another would be to look at the NAS archive in Edinburgh to see whether they have fallen heir to any records. I have lost their web address but a quick Google will find them.
