Industrial Insurance Agent
Just wondering if anyone knows what this job would entail. I have one of my Johnston's working as one in the Haddington area during the late 1800s.

Re: Industrial Insurance Agent
Prior to the 1911 National Insurance Act, the only way of insuring against the consequences of an accident, i.e. loss of income, compensation for injury such as loss of a limb, etc., was either to be a member of one of the many "Friendly Societies" that existed, or to pay premiums to a similar commercial scheme, as here, I'd suspect, in terms of the occupation indicating that he collected the premiums from members.Pandabean wrote:Just wondering if anyone knows what this job would entail. Trades Unions eventually also became involved but were not in general well looked on in this era, hence the reason for the flourishing of "Friendly Societies".
