I am just wondering would there be employment records for a House Painter working for the Marquess of Tweedale?
One of my Johnston ancestors worked there at the start of the 20th century and from a census he is down as House Painter (Estate).
Sorry I cant be more detailed than that but my laptop with all my data is away for repair so I cant get exact dates. I may be able to check up this weekend on a back up CD that I made.
Regards,
Andy

Check with NAS if any estate records have been deposited in their "Gifts & Deposits" series of records.
Try also the nearest local archive.
And there's always a possibility that a letter direct to the current Marquis might produce a result.
If there are records at NAS or a local archive be aware that it may take some time to look through all relevant material.
