My grandmother and her sister were sent to a dancing master by their well off stepfather so that they would stand a better chance of "marrying well" within an acceptable class!
Didn't work, I have to say! True, they were both good dancers, but both married "beneath their station" into the "tradesman class".
Didn't stop my grandmother being called, behind her back I must stress, "The Duchess" She was a perfect example of "millionaire tastes on a pauper's income"
She could also embroider and lay a table to a very high standard, but couldn't get sixpence value from sixpence (my grandfather's actual fond description )

I have a Dancing Master in my line-McKimmies & I must say it sounds a more exciting life than Farming which most of the others seemed to follow as an occupation.
