Salmon fishing in Inverness

Post by iangmacdonald » Mon Jun 04, 2007 6:51 pm

Is anyone aware of any source material on the salmon fishing business in Inverness in the early 1800s as I'd be interested in knowing more about it?

I'm trying to track down a John Fraser who was a salmon fisher in the Inverness area. He is currently a dead-end. He had a daughter, Jessie, born around 1815-1822 apparently in Dochgarroch.

Dochgarroch is a tiny place at the head of Loch Ness about 4 miles south of Inverness. Today it is an overnight stop for luxury Loch Ness cruisers.
Dochgarroch is on the Caledonian canal where the River Ness runs alongside the canal so it seems a likely place for a salmon fisher to be based since I understand that the Ness had a great salmon run (I've seen a photo of them still netting there in the 1950s).

I doubt I'll have much luck with John since there were multitudes with that name around Inverness - but you never know your luck. It would be nice to be able to do a search of the census records on profession - John might still have been there in 1841 and 1851.

Living in hope.

Hi Ian
The Highland Council Archives
http://www.highland.gov.uk/leisure/arch ... larchives/
have salmon related items in their catalogue at:

Might be needle in haystack stuff though.... who knows, you just might strike lucky.

There may be other sources elsewhere too.

Best wishes
