Electoral Registers 1939-1950

Post by Susie Q » Tue Jun 07, 2022 4:54 pm

I can find my Great- Grandad, Andrew Sanaghan/Sannaghan , and his wife Catherine, in every Register, bar those between 1939 and 1950. I was told that they managed a pub during WW2, in Kinghorn { Bay View Hotel}. My Grandad, John Sanaghan managed The Salutation pub in Kinross, 1945-47, found him easily enough, but G-Granda, remains a mystery. Can anyone advise, please ?

I had a look at the Valuation Rolls on Scotlands People:
between 1930 -1940 an
ANDREW SANAGHAN
was noted as
Tenant of HOUSE 3 EAST ROW CARDENDEN AUCHTERDERRAN
I'm not sure where you are searching - I couldn't get any hits at all on Find My past in that era.
There are only a few of that surname in the area: Andrew, Benjamin, John, Owen in 1940.
Maybe they are also 'yours'

Yes, I had already located all his other addresses, and the other Sanaghans are either his brothers or cousins. However the years when he is "missing", are 1939-1950. There's no trace on the Electoral Registers. The rest of my family believe that he resided in Kinghorn during the War years, but again, I can't find him. Thank you for looking.

it's just at that frustrating period of history - far enough away for modern records [like telephone directories] to be unhelpful, but too soon for historical records [ census, valuation rolls] to come up trumps.

I take it he wasn't in the Forces at that period? that could make a family vanish - if he was away and his wife went to live with family?
The 1939 National Identity Records aren't on-line for Scotland, but you may be able to access them see here: https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/ ... l-register

I've located Andrew & family at his address, 79 Whitehall Avenue, in the Auchterderran Register right up until 1966. He died in 1968. What's puzzling me is that from 1939 until 1950, he's vanished. He was 57 in 1940, so, too old to serve in the war. Perhaps he moved out of Scotland, though I believed he was living in Kinghorn during this time.I shall carry on looking. Thank you.

The online telephone directories on Ancestry didn't show this family either. However, back in those days only a minority of folks would have had a phone.

All the best,
