Hi Lesley, Andrew P & Russell,

Thank you all for your help, hints & tips, links & also for linking my uploads....There is always help whenever I visit TS, it's just great.

So now I have a Maria FINLAY, b.c.1837 in Unknown place, a destitute inmate scholar at the Glasgow House of Refuge for Females, 288 Parliamentary Rd,Glasgow on 30th March 1851.

That's more than I had yesterday, so now to search for what records are available, if any, for the House of Refuge for Females.

Russell's link was interesting to read, it lists this place under Reformatories.

Regards, Vicki

Remember however that at this time children were often sent to Reformaties for the crime of bieng poor, orphaned or being the children of destitute or inadequate parents.

Hi Vicki,
Black's Picturesque Tourist of Scotland [perhaps an unfortunate title] - page 235 found in 'books.google.co.uk' tells us that the House of Refuge was for Indigent and Orphan boys and that another was soon to be built for 'destitute young females'.
Glad that you have got a step further.
