Hello Jean,

There are a few Beys on the 1841 census all from Aberdeenshire.

I thought I had found your Helen (age 11 on the census) and family in Kintore but this appears to be the family of John Smith and Ann Clark.

It might be worth a browse around the FREECEN site.

I know I'm a bit late here.

I do know a family by the name of BYE - a possible alternate spelling.

Hi again,

You may have this but I think this is Helen in 1851. They have interesting neighbours.

Hi Annette

I have the Fowlers documented back to 1705. That is Helen with James Fowler in Bankhead in 1851. I have Walter Fowler and his family at Bankhead back to 1841. My mother in law was a Fowler so I'm really pleased to have found her family so far back. I'm now on the search for the female lines of the family.

It is Helen's family with the surname, Bey, that is now my latest quest.

Thanks so much for taking an interest.

I have found some more Beys from Tarland on the IGI. Looks like Ann had a brother Alexander.

More investigating to be done now.

Looked on my 1881 discs for any Beys. None to be found. They are all McBeys of McBays. Could be them though. :?

More work for tomorrow!!

Just can't believe this. :o

After finding out that the name was probably Bey from Tarland, I typed this into Google and came up with this website. www.county-surnames.co.uk

There is someone on there researching Bey from Tarland. Also Smith from Tarland. This person has 3 middle names that are all connected to my lot!!! :D

I've sent off an e mail

Watch this space :D :D :D

Hi All

I have had a reply from the lady who is researching the Bey family.

Apparantly John Smith married Margaret Bey, not Ann. (IGI has a marriage and a number of children, but not my Helen)

Ann Bey married a Charles Farquharson (again IGI has a marriage and a number of children)

This lady has death certs for most of the children of John Smith and Margaret Bey. Two of them show the incorrect mother. One Shows Elizabeth and one shows Helen. One of the children is her g grandfather. His d.c. shows the correct name Margaret.

It looks as though my Helen is the daughter of John Smith and Margaret Bey and the informant to her death(her husband) guessed/didn't know his mother in law's name (like two others mentioned above)

Am I correct in assuming this?

It's getting better!

Found John and Margaret Smith in Logie Coldtone in 1841 with 4 children. Two of the children on here not shown on the IGI, Anne and Alexander. No Helen

However, found a Helen Smith, aged 10, herd girl, in 1841 at Tarland with a family name of Gauld. Could be my Helen :?

Helen was born in Logie Coldstone and was married there also.

Any opinions please.

Jean
