Hello Roxy,
Was really excited by your reply and suggestion of Konigsberg. It certainly could be that name looking at the writing but when I did a google search and found a map it seems a long way from the place of birth on her Declaration of Nationality - Taurage/Tavriq, Lithuania.
Mmmmmm, will keep going.
All the best,
Carole

Carole,
Just looking at Google Earth (other satellite imagery is - probably - available) and it looks to me like Tavrik (Taurage) is actually nearer to Konigsberg (Kaliningrad) - about 100 miles - than it is to Kovna (Kaunas).
And, the more that I look at it the more that I am convinced that the census detail indicates 'Konigsberg Russian Subject'.

I'll think of something appropriate soon!

Re: 1901 census - problem deciphering place of birth
Hello everyone,
I said I would get back to you all once I had been in touch with scotlandspeople re the 1901 census for Gorbals with the 'place of birth' which I couldn't read.
A very nice lady at scotlandpeole sent for the original census book and emailed a copy of the page in question. The writing on the page is indeed clearer BUT.......... the page has been worked on by another clerk and that person has put more scoring through the name and so it is still not legible. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
That's it I feel. A long wait for the 1911 census is my only chance.
