Hi again,

I'm a bit curious about Malcolm who married in 1880. I can't see him with the family on any census or was it just a typo?

Regards,
Annette

Nova scotia BMDs are on line at https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/
From the family that Sarah spotted, I I think I spot the mother Mary's death in 1873 - she was a McLeod ! parents Donald & Margt McLeod.

Now I'm not sure if this helps at all.

Annette,

Your are right Malcolm lived with his maternal grandparents and after his grandparents deaths, his uncle John McKay 1871 (census) in Skye, He moved to Leith where he married. Tragically in Nov 1892 Malcolm lost three of his children to measles related diseases, which must have been unbelievably hard for the family. I have a beautiful if not poignant account of Malcolm's life, written by his great great granddaughter not only recording the family members but of the conditions they were likely to have endure. Malcolm died in 1938 aged 82 years.

I have all the information for all the Mcleods and their siblings with the exception of the main one Norman Mcleod, part-time fisherman, Ag labourer, printfield worker, I guess anything to keep his family fed and sheltered. The family regularly moved between Skye and Renton or Norman himself would go back to Skye to fish but for some unknown reason between 1881/1882 he died. We do not know the where or circumstances of his death, but suspect it may have been fishing related, and we may never find out. :x

Sally
That could well be the McNeil family
My own great grandmother was Margaret McLeod and my mother was also Margaret McLeod James. and we do have Donalds, but both are common names for McNeils and McLeods.
I guess its back to the drawing board as they say :(

Hello Alcluith,

I tried the newspapers 1881–82 but couldn’t find anything relating to Norman McLeod.

There was a massive storm in November 1881. Because there was such widespread damage and loss of shipping there doesn’t appear to have been much reporting about individuals.

This page mentions a loss of 250 Skye fishing boats in the storm

No doubt anti-establishment feeling would have been intense on Skye around this time.

All the best,
Alan

Alan,

I have searched most records about the Nov 1881 storm including local newspapers and the archives on Skye itself, but have never found anything about my Norman McLeod. It is only the fact that the majority of his family were in Renton in the 1881 census and there is a possible Norman with son Donald in Snizort, Skye that made us consider his death being fishing related. Given the the length of time between census and Nov storm I am not certain that he would have spend so long away from his family. It is also interesting that all his children have him on their marriage certificate as a fisherman except Christina McLeod who in her 1882 certificate, the first marriage certificate to show Norman as deceased, has him as a general labourer. Maybe he did not die at sea, but then why no death certificate???
