Hi Carol,

Again you are a star - although i forgot to say i had the 1871 1861 census! sorry - but i didn't have the 1851 which is great as it has Mary Sweenie and her family (I have her as Sweeney) - very interesting and it also confirms he is from Sligo (very rare to get an actual area in Ireland on a census - for me anyway!).
So if James was on the 1841 census he might be down as age 14 now as he is 24 on the 1851 census. He died in 1890 and is recorded as 53 years old. Going by him being 24 in 1851 would make him born c1827 therefore 63 when he died a difference of 10 years :?
Question is did he come with his parents or not ? 1841 census does not show a James Reynolds 14 years of age in Glasgow but we know what the 1841 census is like for age differences.
Thanks for the help,

Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

Happy to help out! Do you know what James' mother's name was? I've missed that in your posts. Here's the only Francis Reynolds that I've come up with on the 1841 census. Of course, James would probably have been out working by that time. Also, saw a census listing with the name spelled Ranolds--one more option!

Hi Carol,

Thanks for looking for me -Francis Reynolds married to Mary Lanaghan or Lonaghan -he was a Flour Miller. I think the Francis you have found is this one on SP

1 1841 REYNOLDS FRANCIS M 35 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 211/00 021

Of Course there is also the possibility that they lived somewhere else when they came from Ireland but out of the whole list this one below is about the nearest.

4 1841 REYNOLDS JAMES M 10 KILMACOLM /RENFREW 569/00 005/00 003

Hi again,

Have you had any luck tracing James' brother Francis? He was living with James and Mary on the 1861 census age 29, mason's laborourer.

There is a family of Francis Reynolds, wife Mary and children beginning with the 1871 census that sure looks like him. If you go to the IGI and search for Francis Reynolds, wife Mary you get around 6 children and the first, Mariam, is born in Sligo, Ireland in 1859. The second child John, is born in Glasgow in 1862. If this is James' brother, then I would guess that the parents stayed in Ireland and James and Francis came to Scotland on their own. Just a thought!

Hi Carol,
That is a good theory you have - perhaps as James was the older brother he went to Glasgow first and then Francis followed - I found the following on LDS for the family of James Reynolds and Mary Sweeney

PATRICK REYNOLDS -
Gender: Male Birth: 12 SEP 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
CATHERINE REYNOLDS -
Gender: Female Birth: 04 JUL 1868 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JAMES REYNOLDS -
Gender: Male Birth: 12 SEP 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARGARET THOMLINE REYNOLDS -
Gender: Female Birth: 06 SEP 1865 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
FRANCIS REYNOLDS -
Gender: Male Birth: 07 JUL 1857 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland [
MARY REYNOLDS -
Gender: Female Birth: 30 JUN 1859 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ELIZABETH REYNOLDS -
Gender: Female Birth: 12 APR 1855 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ELIZABETH DOYLE REYNOLDS –
Gender: Female Birth: 24 SEP 1861 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Charles Reynolds the first born is not listed on the above - he was born c1853 as he is on the census of 1871 age 18 born Glasgow. As Mary Sweeney is also born Glasgow i think we can assume he left Ireland and met and married Mary leaving his parents and siblings in Ireland until Francis left as well.
I think as well the above middle names "Thomline (Tomlin maybe?) and Doyle could be Irish surnames in the family - the search goes on!

Thanks for making me continue looking,

Ailsa

Ailsa,

I also noticed that Mary Sweenie's father Charles was from Sligo, Ireland and that Charles and Bridget had daughter Mary in 1830 in Lanarkshire so they were in Scotland earlier than the Reynolds. Maybe the two families knew each other in Ireland and James headed for the Sweeney house when he decided to come over to Scotland.

The family of Francis Reynolds that I was looking at as a possible for James' brother can't be the right one. I looked at that Francis' death cert. from 1905 and he gives his parents as Francis Reynolds, slaughter house worker and Mary Miller. Too many with the same names! Makes you wish for a Basil and an Ethel just for a break!

Hi Carol,
That's a useful bit of info about the Sweeny or Sweenie family. I plan to go over to Ireland maybe in the Spring as i am now collecting a few good leads. Let's hope Sligo has the church records or even a headstone or two. :)
