I can't believe that anyone at Ancestry bothered to make up a plausible entry for him... there must have been a notation somewhere that they saw and we're not seeing.
Wierd - as you say, it is almost as if Ancestry have seen an "alternative" page - but how could they? My understanding was that there was ONE copy of the collected information, made by the enumerator in a book, from his own notes and the collected schedules from each household and once entered in the book, the book went to the registrars, the original completed schedules then having been destroyed. Very odd..... :?

Ancestry says the source for the 1901 data is:
Original data: Scotland. 1901 Scotland Census. Reels 1-446. General Register Office for Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland.
