Hi Fiona,

sorry, I should have said these Russell / Mitchell marriages took place in 1911 and 1907 in Glasgow. If there was a connection it would be a generation or two later than where you are now. Sorry.

As to your Irish connection, I'm not surprised the trail has gone cold. I have had some success tracing my father's family mostly because they came from a small village where memories are long! On my mother's side I cannot go any further back than her maternal grandparents because no-one remembers the family and records here are not good. I'm grateful for the drop of Mitchell blood from Aberdeenshire to keep me occupied and off the streets!

I suppose you've no idea even what part of Ireland your Clarke came from - I have Clarke connections in County Galway.

Regards,

Tish

Hi Tish,
My Russell family did have a John born about 1830 (he was listed as 11 in 1841 Census). He had brothers Robert and Thomas and sisters Janet Margaret and Christina. John signed his mother's DC with his mark X in 1869 and his address was "visiting 97 Westmuir Street". She is listed as dying "Tolcross, Shettleston Glasgow." I see your James married Mary Schofield in 1870 so I suppose your James could have been a son of any of my Russell "men"!! Do any of those names or places sound familiar?
John Clark(e) is listed in the 1841 Census and subsequent ones as born in Ireland. HIs parents were Thomas Clark and Martha Smith (on his DC)but I have no idea from which county he came in Ireland.

Hi Fiona,

Yes, I've just looked up the marriage of James Russell and Mary 'Scoffield'. I am finding it hard to read on the screen and can't print at the moment. However it looks like James was 32 then and his parents names are given as John Russell amd Agnes ms 'Glenorse'? The address looks like Bell St Dennistoun, High Curch Glasgow. By the time the daughters married the Mitchells they were living at 90 Black St. while the Mitchells lived at 171 Kennedy St. Their marriages seem to have taken place at the house in Black St. I don't know how likely that is. Margaret Russelll who married Peter Mitchell had the middle name of Paton and they were still living at 90 Black St when she died in 1940 aged 54. Does any of this ring bells for you?

As to your Clark(e) - with a combination of Clark and Smith surnames, I am inclined to think the counties of Cavan and Monaghan are your most likely area to start searching. The Ancestral Research Centre for Monaghan has indexed most of the church records for the county so they might be worth writing to. You will get them at
"Monaghan Ancestral Research Centre,
6, Tully,
Monaghan Town,
Republic of Ireland"
Be warned, they charge, but usually they will write and tell you what they can do and how much they will charge for that. Really, unless you live near Dublin City, it's the only way to get information here. I have had to resort to a similar centre for information on branches of the family from County Laois.

Best of luck

Tish

Hi Tish,
It would appear that your James is too old to be the son of my John unfortunately. I could not see an entry in the IGI for James' birth.
Thanks for the suggestions for my Irish ancestors - I will write to the Monaghan Ancestral Research Centre when I have a chance. I have a house full at present (my son has returned home from overseas with a partner and her two children..... permanently!!! Hope they find somewhere to live soon!)

Fiona,

sounds like an invasion at your house!! Let me know how you get on with your search. I'd love to offer to help but I don't get to Dublin all that often and I have committed myself to look-ups some months back that I haven't got to yet. If you have no luck come back to me after Christmas when I might have caught up with my life!

Regards

Sorry Fiona,

that address for Monaghan should have read No. 6 Tully Street.

See also http://www.irishroots.net/Cavan.htm where you will see that both Smith and Clark are mentioned as common names in that county. Indeed as far as I know there are more Smiths in Cavan than many other counties put together. LIke Gibbons in Mayo, throw a stone and you'll hit one of us! :D

Thanks for that Tish, I will drop them an email or form , although all I have are names and no places or dates (although I could make an approximate guess at the date.)
