The 1894 marriage register entry gives you the parents as:

Robert BARNES and Mary Jane BARNES, previously McFARLANE, MS OLIVER

and

Robert IRWINE and Elizabeth IRWINE MS ARCHER

First try a short cut and look for marriages of these couples. There's one :!: , but you'll need to be creative with wildcards to find it, - hint: search using BAR*..........

Search also for the death register entries of the parents found on the 1894 marriage register entry. You should quickly locate those for Robert and Elizabeth, but, again, wildcards are required, - IR?IN* ......

Robert and Mary appear in the 1881 census at

Dwelling: West Bridgend Black Bull Buildings
Census Place: Cardross, Dumbarton, Scotland

Robert BARNES 8 M Dumbarton, Dunbarton, Scotland

They also appear in the 1871 census, probably the same address.

So, with the other census record in a previous post, you know that all the parents shown on the 1894 marriage register entry were born in Ireland.

To tie the various records together, and get absolute proof, you will need to look at a couple at least of the birth register entries of kids who show up in the various census entries.

The help that people have offered here has been heart warming. To be able to find my ancestors and my roots has me hooked.

for DavidWW

Was it common for the registrar to make a mistake in the spelling of names. Or is it that people may not have known how to spell their names, so without documents the registrar had to make a guess based on phoentics.

I have now found the names of two more sets of grandparents

Robert Barnes(Barons) David BARONS - Mary FORREST and Robert OLIVER - Helen ROBB (dec'd as of 1867).

Would someone be so kind as to look up these in the 1881 Census. All but Helena ROBB were alive as of 1867. I may have to look in the 1871 Census, thought I would check here first.

Any idea how I can find out where in Ireland(maybe Northern Ireland) my ancestors were born. I guess the Census does not provide this information

:D :D :D
Re-searching Barnes(Dumbarton,Scotland & Ireland), Cullen(Magherafelt, Ireland & Dumbarton, Scotland), Logan(Ayrshire & Lanarkshire) Boyle(Bonhill,Dunbartonshire & Ireland) Irwine(Down, Ireland) McAlpine(Luss,Scotland) Oliver (Dumbarton & Ireland)

Back then most people weren't particularly bothered about how their name was spelt.

Often it's a case of what the person hearing the record judged was the spelling. In this case, given a broad Ulster accent , - Robert IRWINE and Elizabeth ARCHER were born in Co. Down, so chances are that Robert BARNES and Mary Jane OLIVER were from Ulster as well, - I can well imagine a Dumbartonshire registrar hearing BARNES as BARONS :!:
