I'm trying to think out of the box. I have a Robert B McColl b. 1855 listed in the 1881 census living with David McColl b. 1847 his brother in Lancashire. Sons of James McColl and Mary Stewart married 1840 in Mearns, Renfrew.
So I have the right area, right sort of dates, but the lists I find say David is a son but no mention of Robert B.
My John Robert seems to have dropped the Robert but perhaps this was his real name. Is there any where else I can try to find him. I tried Rootsweb, Familysearch, Freebmd etc. and some google variations!
McColl of Kilmacolm.....

Sobil, Please, please , please, get the bl**dy mariage cert. in your sticky little genealogical paws. If you can't prise it from your mothers tight grip,(they can be difficult to let information go sometimes
)send for one from Free B.M.D. It might clear this Kilmacolm thing up once and for all. Now if there is no mention of Kilmacolm on said cert. consider the following

Ian,
Are you married..... I like bl**dy minded men!
Mater is only dithery because she requires 99% of her brain to operate the internet which only 1% leaves for important info (She is 75). I'd give her this web site address but then again she is still very handy with the wooden spoon!
The latest story is Kilmacolm is from her memory and that of the son of her deceased brother. (He may have a copy of said Marriage Cert I will email him post haste). Mumsie was supposed to ring Cardiff last Monday I will chase her again.
I'm getting in a mess with all the McColls so I shall spend the day rationalising my records.
Jack..... thank you for being gentle. xx

Morning Sobil, Please do not give your mother this site address, I fear for my safety.
Your mother sounds very like mine-(aged 76 past) extremely fit and able- and a law unto herself. Mine decides to drop snippets of info when she decides, not when I ask. The other night I told her I had written confirmation of where her gt.gt.grandfather was born. 'That's nice' says she, 'but have have you come across John ***** yet?' 'No' says I, intrigued. 'Well then, I won't tell you just now, because I'll just confuse you' says she. Exit one son, till next week!!!
And you say I'm bl**dy minded, wonder where I get it from
p.s. The wife tells me I'm still married
Jack, Thanks for the McColl info-- Maybe have to wait and see what info Sobil gets from marriage cert. doesn't look promising though.

Ian,
I've managed to stay safe by keeping several thousand miles away.... ever thought of emmigrating?
Ditto my mother, she seems to think I can find our cousins the "Porters" who bogged off to Australia in the late 1800's plus all my living relatives here just so I can ask them if anyone ever mentioned Kilmacolm.....
The document does exist. It will appear one day. Mater's up for a hip replacement soon.... maybe that's a safe time to visit when she can't run!

At last most of my paper notes are transcribed and stuck all over the kitchen wall which is easier than software! I'm now trailing through all the interesting bits on my comp that I copied from the web including many McColls from the Kilmacolm area who were carpenters, joiners.... the old biddy could be right.
I've tried checking up on Gavin McColl but haven't found the right place yet. I know there is a Neil McColl out there doing research and I think his family love calling everyone Gavin so I shall track him down. He seems irreverent...... maybe we have the same genes!
I have emailed Mater and told her you are running scared.

Okay,
No marriage certificate, I believe my cousin is scanning stuff and will send it on in the next few days. I have learnt that our James McColl was listed as deceased on John Roberts marriage certificate dated 25/09/1882. However, I have found the following on a Robert McColl and was wondering if anyone can help me find out what happened to him:
Robert McColl b. 22/10/1858 Greenock Renfrew
Father James McColl b.08/02/1800 Eastwood Renfrew
Married on 24/07/1840 at Kilmacolm to
Mother Margaret Caldwell b. 12/02/1820 Kilmacolm Renfrew
I emailed the lady with the database but she says she doesn't think it is a match. However, I think our wires were crossed and she has no death info for Robert McColl so I am trying to do my own tracking.....his father was likely dead by 1882 and he had twin sisters Dorah and Ann amongst others and twins run down our McColl line. I have a scan of my own eggs if anyone thinks it is relevant!
