Relating places we know well to official numbers doesn't always seem to work out does it :(

At least Lesley seems to have tracked the right place down.

A minor point, learnt from the poor relief abbreviations, - around that time, "S.S." or plain "SS" was the shorthand for South Side, i.e. south of the Clyde.

Hi all,

Sorry I took it for granted that everyone would know that.
The S.1 (South 1) is like our old postcodes. These days it's G41.

Districts included C - Central, W - West, N - North, E - East. SW - South West etc. etc. The farther from the centre of Glasgow you were the higher the number.

Regards,
Annette M

For those not familiar with poor relief records, the inspectors' reports, where extant, often provide a mini-biography, often going back to the parents of the applicant and spouse, as well as giving a detailed place of birth for the applicant and spouse, quite often down to the level of townland for those born in Ireland.

The Glasgow inspectors' reports are particularly good, but a consequence of that is that they often use abbreviations, especially for places.

To my eternal shame   , being a Soosider of 12 years residence - a couple of miles south of Jack McLean, plus 4 years earlier residence on the southern limits of Shawlands on the very banks of the Cart (Black or White?, - cannae mind), - if we wanted to impress someone we stretched it and said Newlands  , - it took me several years to crack the code, so to speak, for the abbreviation "SS" :!:

Thanks Davie.

And here is the marriage entry I was having trouble reading:
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-243

Quality is not good but I think its (dodgy bits in italic):
20 Dec 1888 27 Princes Sq. Strathbungo, after Banns etc. Established church.

James Powell, Ellie School Head-Master, batchelor
123 North John Street, Glasgow age 32
Flora Duff, Spinster, 27 Princes Sq. Strathbungo age 28

Thomas Powell School Master deceased & Jane Powell M.S. ?
Deceased.
William Duff Cotton Yarn Merchant and Agnes Duff m.s. Ross

can't make out minister, witnesses Mary N Parker John Duff
Last column, Dec 23rd then ?

Quick check on IGI and this seems to be him:
JAMES POWELL
Birth: 27 JUL 1856 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Father: THOMAS POWELL
Mother: JANE MCNAB

Though it might be McSomething, but its so unclear. Suspect it is McNab.

One for a look at the original register. It could be McNab but it could be many other short Mc names as well !

If you contact GROS direct they will do their best to decipher it.
