Hi Lesley
That was great to see the family in the 1841, using Guy as the name.
Was it the same spelling in 1851?
Oh, and yes please, i would like a copy of that too.
We knew that there was a Susan Gay born 1836? to the same family, if you can have a wee search for that lass as well, it would be appreciated.
We know a fair bit of the Gay family, but could never find the births as it never occured to any of us to think of Guy, till I noticed your post.
Here are Donald and his brother on the 1881 census

All I have are my handwritten notes of Guys found in the 1841 & 1851 census - I tend to take notes of all folks with of names of relevance when I'm trawling through census microfilms. It tends to save time later when you suddenly wonder if X's brother/uncle/sister was there too and you weren't looking! There aren't that many Guys in the area.if you can have a wee search for that lass as well, it would be appreciated.

Hi
The Argyllshire place of birth is probably Strachur. To my knowledge, Strachan (pronounced Strawn) is in Aberdeenshire and I don't think there's one is Argyll.
Anne
That John Guy and Elisabeth McNair were married on 15th August 1829 in Cardross and she is almost certainly the extracted entry for an Elizabeth McNair born 1st March 1801 in Strachlachlan to Peter McNair and Mary Brody, which is more or less Strachur. Hope this infor is of use to one of you but they probably belong to neither. At least I've convinced myself it reads Stachur or Strachlachlan.
BTW There was a John Guy born 20 Mar 1795 to John Guy and Marjorie Davie and a John Guy born 7 May 1798 to a Robert Guy and Cathrine Davie but you may have them already if you are looking for Guy/Davie combinations.

Hi Anne
You are probably right. I'm not familiar with place names round there - the pitfalls of transcribing areas with which you are not familiar! I'm sure someone from Dunbartonshire will make mincemeat of my attempts at place names in the local area
Strachur in census-style handwriting would look pretty like Strachan to someone (me!) who didn't know the likely place names.
Thanks for that - I'll away and amend my scribbled notes!
Best wishes
