Here is another group of children to consider. They are born to Agnes Anderson (father not named).
WILLIAM ANDERSON - Birth: 02 JAN 1867 Coldingham, Berwick
JACOB ANDERSON - Birth: 07 NOV 1868 Coldingham, Berwick
JAMES ANDERSON - Birth: 23 NOV 1870 Coldingham, Berwick
ROBERT ANDERSON - Birth: 23 NOV 1870 Coldingham, Berwick
ELIZABETH ANDERSON - Birth: 28 JAN 1873 Coldingham, Berwick
JOHN ANDERSON - Birth: 15 OCT 1874 Coldingham, Berwick
If the census is to be taken at face value, then these (or some of these) could be Jacob's children.
If you ignore the Elizabeth (1872) and Robert (1874) that I gave in my earlier message (born to Jacob Nisbet and Elizabeth Colven), then this group and the first marriage children in the message above fit in better with the 1881 census group.
I think you need to find this lot on the 1871 census to see if they lived as one family then. It does look as if Agnes Anderson was more than a housekeeper to Jacob Nisbet senior.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Another certificate that must be worth a look at is the death of Robert, the 1870 twin of John above. Looking at the index, there is no death of Robert Anderson in Coldingham from 1870 to 1881. But there is a Robert Nisbet death in 1876, aged 6 in Coldingham. It would be worth a look at that certificate, particularly at who the parents are listed as.

Very worth while a look as it's a certain gentleman we now know well who is shown as married to Agnes NISBET MS ANDERSON. Things also tie together very neatly in that the informant is the grandfather.AndrewP wrote:Another certificate that must be worth a look at is the death of Robert, the 1870 twin of John above. This situation has been bugging me so I set out to see what I could find.
The 1881 census entry for Helen leads to an 1863 birth in Coldingham, parents Jacob NISBET and Elizabeth NISBET MS ANDERSON, married 29Dec1855 at Lamberton Toll, - that's an Eastern borders equivalent of Gretna Green, i.e. irregular by declaration
, so not to be found in the statutory register of marriages unless they went through the Sheriff's Warrant procedure, which doesn't appear to be the case.
Elizabeth died 1866, parents shown as William ANDERSON, Fisherman, and Mary ANDERSON MS BELL, informant father-in-law Robert NISBET.
An Agnes ANDERSON then becomes housekeeper to Jacob and almost certainly has several children by Jacob.
Jacob dies 1901, shown as married to Agnes ANDERSON, informant William NISBET, Son.
There is then a 1927 death of an Agnes ANDERSON, "single", 87, in Coldingham, informant James NISBET, Son, parents William ANDERSON, Fisherman, and Mary Ann ANDERSON MS BELL.
QED - Elizabeth and Agnes were sisters
David
PS It would have been neat to find IGI records for William ANDERSON and Mary (Ann) BELL showing the births of Elizabeth and Agnes, but there ain't any. Anyone care to check BVRI?
dww
PPS Couldn't resist a look a the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
In 1891, confusingly, Agnes is shown as "Agnes NISBET, - Sister-in-Law, - General Servant Domestic"
But in 1901 it's now "Agnes NISBET - wife".
Would it surprise anyone to know that the two youngest kids in the household in 1901, Cecilia NISBET and Andrew NISBET, are registered under the surname ANDERSON as illegitimate, the informant being Jacob NISBET, "occupier".
Just who did he think that he was kidding
dww
PPPS And then there's the 1871 census entry with Agnes shown as "Agnes NISBET - Wife", aged 27, but the three eldest kids, Alison, 12 (maybe 13), Agnes, 10, and Helen, 7, would have been the children of Jacob and Elizabeth ANDERSON.

Hi,
Here is what appears to be the 1881 census entry for Agnes Nisbet, daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Anderson. She is listed with her grandmother Mary Ann Anderson nee Bell.

Also came across an Ancestral File entry for Alexander Nisbet, parents Robert Nisbet and Alison Brown, (therefore a brother of your Jacob) who died in the Eyemouth Disaster on 14th October 1881.

Alexander's 1865 marriage certificate (spouse Ann Gunn) confirms his parents as Robert Nisbet and Alison Brown (both shown as still alive!). He was aged 21, which gives him a birth year of around 1843/4. This matches with the 1881 census (37) and the age given for him when he died in the disaster (37). Details re his birth on the Ancestral file entry therefore appear to be wrong. The igi shows two births of an Alexander to Robert Nisbet and Alison Brown (both LDS submissions). The first is 26 Feb 1834 and the second 12th November 1843
This is Alexander, Ann (Gunn) and family in the 1881 census. As you can see, one of his sons was called Jacob.

The Eyemouth Disaster claimed the lives of 129 Eyemouth fisherman (plus another 60 from other coastal towns)after a sudden storm hit the fishing fleet while out at sea. A Google search shows that an Alexander Nisbet age 37 and a William Nisbet age 35 both lost their lives on board the Forget Me Not of Eyemouth. William was also originaly from Coldingham ( ref.1881 census) and may have been a brother of Alexander and Jacob.

Well what can I say except that I am overwhelmed with the responseto my query about my husbands ancestors.Elizabeth and Agnes anderson were sisters Agnes arriving to look after the children after the death of Elizabeth in childbirth but there has been no ref to this in the records'They had 11 children together(Icarnt believe it either Jacob must of been some man fathered 14 all together). One of these boys named Paul? although my fatherin law said this was not his Christened nasme he emigrated to Vancouver around 1900 maybe this would be Robert? or Alexander.I am amazed that there could be so many people out there who would help so selfishly I really do appreciate all of you.I have an ancestory sub but that only covers England and Wales,I am a sub to Lancs F H S so I will be singing your praisers to them ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU ALL SO MUCHxxx Bernaqdine

Bernandine I'm sure I'm not speakin out of turn by saying "it was our pleasure"!
It's especially nice to get a query that takes us all on a bit of a chase but has lots of info to find....your's was a classic example!! I trust there is still plenty left to uncover for yourself...
...but if you ever have any more questions......
....please come back again....heck come back even if you don't have any questions!!
Best wishes
Jean
