Hi All

It looks like Raren to me also, the only trouble with that name is that there are absolutely no such names on SP at all, at all.

Raven is a different option, not many at all on the whole 1500-1900's

Hi Jean,

I notice George is a widower on that marriage entry.
If he was the George living with Eilzabeth and Jessy in 1841 then perhaps Elizabeth died before 1855.

I agree Nelmit....I've narrowed to the smallest window and still she's not there.....we may never know for certain.....unless we could scare up a MC for another sibling to Henry & George (preferably in a far away district  )

I am convinced enough that it says ditto. On that basis Mr Duncan Ayre married Miss Elizabeth Ayre. The "no relationship" remark in the previous column, I think refers to Elizabeth Ayre - showing that she was not related to Duncan Ayre. Does that mean not related at all - not even by marriage?

On another note, there is a detail lacking from that certificate. It does not say which church the banns were in the forms of. There is no clue from the minister either - he is of St John's Leith. No clues there as to which flavour of church St John's, Leith is, or was.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Don't laugh too hard, Jean :!: ... In my parents' "old country" (in middle-to-Eastern Europe) a wife's name is different from her husband's: a vowel at the end of the man's name is often turned into an "-ova" suffix to produce his wife's surname: so (for example) "Smithy" (for the man) would turn into "Smithova" for his wife. If the man's surname ended in a consonant, just add "-ova" : so a woman who married a man named "Smith" would have the surname "Smithova".
Let's say the "-ova" means something like "wife-of". Kinda like the Scot "Mac" or "Mc" prefix meaning "Son of..."

Oh JayPee....Not really laughing at your response at all!! It was more of a slam on the puir wee manie who scribed down Ditto. I can't help but wonder if he hesitated ever so slightly......or perhaps struggled with the choice but in the end his job training won him over.....

Thank you for your explanation and lesson from European research! I learned something today :D

Best wishes
Jean

Hi all
I'm not long up so maybe not quite with it :? - the marriage of Ann McKay to George Ayre, son of George and the mysterious Elizabeth Rarn/Raren etc. does look like Elizabeth's surname is written as ditto, I'd agree. But the widower I think is the groom (son George, not father George... who is now referred to as Duncan for some reason....) and the relationship comment also would seem to refer to son George, not to his his father and Elizabeth "ditto". Am I just half asleep or does this make sense? Maybe I should just go back to bed!!

Other than that, this problem is the first thing that popped into my head this morning - dear me :?

Catbug -
1861 (husband widowed on census) and after 1856 (4 year old child on the same census.).
Can you tell us the name of the 4year old child please? Or can you post the census page up in the gallery?

best wishes
Lesley

I can't "see" anything but "Ditto" :!: :!: :!:

It would be an idea to to have a look at the relevant 1851 and 1861 censuses in case the Registrar was the enumerator, and see how he handled the "-Do-" situation  , but, but, being Govan that's not so likely
