Hello all,

I am back on this merry-go round once more and I am finding more and more problems with the Carroll family. For a start there is no birth listed at the IGI for either Sarah (about 1871 supposedly Glasgow) or John Carroll (about 1865) with the correct parents of Margaret Hughes and John Carroll. In fact there are no children listed for this couple anywhere and that includes out of the way spellings such as Coral, Curry, Currell and even Corr, Carr and Kerr, jsut to be safe!

I can't find any record of the family on any of the censuses other than the 1891 census where Sarah Carroll (now married to Peter McCudden) and her mother is living there too, but her name is given as Sarah. And nope...I tried searching for that too but no luck.

I can't recall whether I stated above that I have found John Carroll's death (b. 1865 or so) and his mother Margaret Hughes Carroll's death. But I cannot find his father's death, and of course, no record of parents' marriage either.

I have searched using the wildcards all over Scotland for these various records and still no luck. It would be great to even find them on the 1881 census, but even that is elusive!

So....does anyone have any idea how I can proceed from here? Perhaps someone else's eyes will turn up something...anyway, I am fed up and my own eyes really DO hurt right now!

Here's hoping!

Hello Nina,

On 1901 Ancestry I searched for ‘Carroll’ with occupation ‘jute’ and up came a dozen or so people from Angus and Lanark before the usual alphabetical run started. One of these is a ‘Carroll’ born 1866, just that, one word, presumably a surname. I don’t have a subscription but narrowed her down to a wife, living Glasgow St. George.

Presumably the first dozen had jute in the occupation, I don’t really know. I’m not sure how that would translate to a SP search.

Hope this helps,
Alan

Thanks Alan,

It's a start anyway! I don't think SP lets us search for "No first name mentioned" but when I am a bit more awake I will have a try. It's almost bed time here and my eyes are shutting.

Thanks for looking :)

Hi Alan,
I keep trying to replicate your Ancestry search for Nina and can't find the person you mention... Could you be more specific about exactly what you did?
Thanks,
Sarah

Me neither, Sarah.

Tried all sorts of things, but got nothing like that.

Hi Nina,

Try this method on SP:
Surname: Carroll

That will return 1212 matches over 49 matches. Don't be put off. They are sorted by alphabetical order of first name with alll the ----- entries at the start of the first page. There are 7 of these un-named Carrolls. Unfortunately there are no good matches for an 1865 (or thereabouts) born one.

All the best,

AndrewP

Ok I’ll see if I can duplicate what I did. I went to Ancestry 1901 Scotland on this page and logged on as a registered user

http://ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1101

Make sure the advanced search options are showing.

Type ‘last name’ - Carroll,
Type ‘occupation’ – jute
Nothing else.

First result page shows some people from Angus
Second result page to fourth result page still Angus
Fifth result page Lanarkshire starts with the person in question
Sixth result page has the last Carroll and the start of the main run starting Adam
(all at 10 results per page)

Sorry about that, there were actually about 50 before the main run started.

That’s the girl on page 5 born 1866.

Alan

  I did EXACTLY what you said and only got 46 results. ALL of them were located in Angus :? This is really odd... Mary, were you able to duplicate Alan's search?

Hi All,

If you don't have "exact matches only" & 50 results per page then Mrs Carroll age 35 comes up at 49. Husband George aged 44 and 2 unnamed kids aged 9 & 7. They live at 53 Mc Alpine Street.

Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!
