Hi all
Ah well, the inclusion of line numbers was obviously just my wishful thinking... I knew Andrew would know the answer.

Best wishes

Tusker wrote:Hi Andrew -- I don't really think I'm looking for a free lunch. I'm just trying to avoid having to open say, six different John Walker's (at 5 credits per name) who were all around the same age, and all lived in the 644\11 RD during a certain time period -- particularly if I know the street on which my particular John Walker lived. Which is why I initially asked if a search could be done on an address.....

In this marvellous world of technology and high-speed computers, I'm sure others have wondered about the same thing....I've also wondered why searches can't be done for all children of a set of parents, rather than having to track each one down individually. More money into the coffers, I guess...... :D
If you know the street address then you need to find a library which holds the street address indexes for the censuses, which will show you the ED involved. NRH has full sets, as, I believe, does The Mitchell. 644 and other Glasgow RDs plus Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen are covered back to 1841. By 1901 most urban areas are also covered.

Some time ago the User Group were given access to a test version of the 1891 (or was it 1901?) street index, prepared for SP, but this never went further........

Gros Subcodes?

Excellent, David! Thank you. I'll try to obtain this info from the sources you suggest. A set of Enumeration Districts contained within a particular Registration District shouldn't be an insurmountable challenge -- given that I've been blessed with a granny who's held Scotland's hide-'n-seek championship title since 1880, and I'm still hot on her trail.....

Worth checking if these street indexes have been microfilmed by LDS....

Hi Tusker,
The Mitchell Library, Glasgow have Street Indexes for the city 1841-1901.
What was the address for John Walker, and which census years?
Do you know when & where born, occupation, and who else might be with him?
Ta - Jack
ps, i'll check 1901 for Elizabeth Kelly at 181 South Wellington St.

Granny Shoved Aff Bus?

Post by Tusker » Sat Feb 25, 2006 2:11 am

Hi, Jack -- Jeez, I'd better not bump into you on an airline flight, eh? Bet you've never heard that one before?...

Actually, John Walker was just a name I used as an example. But any assistance in finding Canada's Most Wanted Granny would be greatly appreciated. I lived in Glasgow for the first 25 years of my life, and rarely visited the Mitchell. Now that I'm retired and have lots of time to do so -- I can't because I'm nowhere near Glasgow. Another of life's little twists of fate -- like terminally-shy grannies, I guess.

Thank you, and thanks to all who have been so generous with their time, and with helpful suggestions.

Gros Subcodes?

Jack -- For those who are at all interested in my efforts at capturing the Most Elusive Granny In Scotland, I'm pleased to say that I've just this minute uncovered another piece of the puzzle, in the form of the name and birthdate of one of her children....

Sarah Adams
born 23 July, 1905
at 226 South Wellington St, Hutchesontown

This is a slightly different address in 1905, than the 181 South Wellington St reported as Granny's Usual Residence on her 28 June 1901 marriage license. And it's definitely my granny Kelly, as her husband James Adams is listed on the birth certificate as a Filecutter (not Tilecutter), just as as he was on the marriage license, and in the 1901 census.

Keep looking over your shoulder Granny --- I'm coming.......

It might or might not be the same place. On the one hand, some people moved quite often, but on the other hand The Post Office liked to leave a minefield for us by occasionally renumbering streets!
