You've got me intrigued now! Why are you certain that he was born in March or April 1780? I ask because a quick check on SP shows only five Andrew Young born in Scotland in 1780, and only one of those was in March/April 1780. Have you checked that site?
Date: 05/03/1780
Name: YOUNG ANDREW
Parent Names: ANDREW YOUNG/no mother's name
Parish: EAST KILBRIDE (East Kilbride is not far from Glasgow)
Ref: 643/00 002*
There are also only five marriages of Andrew Young to a Mary between 1825 and 1838, on the SP site.
Definitely worth your while having a look.

Hi
on the stone it said his age and also on some books within the family. I paid to get some information from Scotlands people and found the same information I think you just did. On his tumb stone it reads his age 71 years 6 months old. He died Sept. 18 1851 so I fiugre March 1780 also he said in the family bible at his age of baptism for one of the children or at the time of a wedding and it works out to be March 1780. I don't have the information with me the family member has it with them and doesn't want me to keep it with all the other papers I have but that is fine I think I have all that it offered.
I also have a question the daughter Jean that was born to Andrew and Mary she was born in 1842 she married Matthew (his parents were William & Hannah and it seems like her and her husband really followed the naming of their children. Here is the order of their children it may help.
William same name as fathers father
Mary Elizabeth same name as mothers mother
Andrew same name as mothers father
James
Thomas
Hannah same name as fathers mother
Hugh
Matthew
Maggie
Elmer
Robert
As you can see the name Thomas is in there as well as Hugh which would be Jeans oldes brother.... very puzzling.....

Hi CG
Well at least with Andrew we seem to have reached the same conclusion!! It looks like he's the one from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. Have you thought about contacting the local family history society? They will have much better local knowledge.
I'll take some time to have a look at the children you've given me, but don't rely on the naming tradition as being definite. From my own experience in my families, although names are repeated they don't appear to follow the "rule". Often if a well-loved aunt or uncle died around the time of the birth of a new baby, the baby would be named for them. Children were also named after well known locals, eg the minister. I've found in my own research that general repetition is more likely than strictly conforming to the "rule".
Like you I have a family bible which takes me back on one of my lines to around 1850 - what a blessing that was! However some of the children there in the 1870s took themselves off to Arkansas - I've not yet figured out why, but I did find them in the US quite easily, using the LDS site. There are descendants of this family living in the US today - I just can't quite find them!
If I think of anything that might help, I'll let you know. I'm by no means an expert - unlike some of the others on this site. I would say don't give up. I've got a brick wall of my own in the 1770s in Fife ... been stuck there for about 20 years ... so don't give up hope. The more places you leave your details the better chance you've got that someone will contact you.
Good luck and don't give up!

I might as well add all the information I have on Andrew and Mary and the order of their children
Hugh born: 1827 Scotland ( i have death cert.)
John born: 1831 or 1836 ( i have this information from the tumb stone but it is hard to read ..June 7 1848 age 12 or 17 since the age of the stone it is hard to tell if it reads 12 or 17.
Agne born: 1832 or 1833 I have only her marriage and census information to tell her age. I am still looking for her death information. I am hoping she is the only one to state where she was born....but not holding my breath....LOL
Margaret born: 1833 or 1834 I have no information regarding census, marriage, death nothing all Ihave is some old papers indicating that there was a Margart Young.
Andrew James born; 1839 the first child born in Canada New Brunswick
Mary born: March 1841 died Feb. 11 1863
Jean born: Feb 9 1842 died Jan 1911

I've drawn out on some paper the info you've given us (so I can try to get to grips with it), and wonder if you have considered the possibility that Mary poss born 1805 might actually be Andrew's daughter and not his wife?? The reason I ask is that the first child you know about is Hugh born 1827 - that would make Andrew 47 at that time and 61 by the time Mary is born in 1841. While it is not impossible, it might be unlikely for Andrew to be as old as 47 before his first child was born. I know time is more flexible for the male of the species!!! Remember to try the ships passenger lists as well. I've heard others have been successful searching there.
Also - what did Andrew do in Canada? That might also help us track him. I had a relative who was a stonemason/builder here but who worked on the Canadian Pacific railway when the family upped and moved to Canada in 1909.
Must go to bed now, got an early start in the morning - will keep thinking for you and who knows maybe the nubmer of posts we've had someone else might chip in with some ideas!!
Let me know how you get on.

Hi
I did think at first that Mary could be a daughter but the small town they were in Binbrook Ontario it states in a number of places she is the wife of Andrew.
I still think that perhaps she is the second wife to Andrew and William and Thomas could possibly be sons from the first marriage.
Andrew was a farmer as so were almost every male in the family. I have also checked the ships list and have found nothing. All I know for sure is that the first child born in Canada was Andrew James Feb. 11 1839 in New Brunswick. So I know that the ship sailed from Scotland to New Brunswick or Novia Scotia.

Hi, Canadian Girl,
Greetings from East Kilbride. I live in the town but none of my relatives come from here unfortunately. I am a bit of a rookie but our local library has a genealogy corner and books with local resources so if ever you want anything looked up that the local library could help with just ask or if you want any photos of E.K. if it turns out that you have the right ancestor.
One of my lines goes back to New Brunswick, St. John. via Ireland (born 1815) any ideas how I could start tracing on-line without spending a fortune as I've spent enough recently?
Regards Fergie

Hi, CG,
John Harding was born in Ireland in 1815. Mary Doherty born in Ireland 1822. Don,t know if they married in Ireland or St. John. I think their first child was born in in 1847 in St. John and they were married 27th April 1846 so I'm thinking this was in St. John. I have info about their children and I am descended from their daughter Mary who actually moved to Belfast but her other siblings stayed in Canada. My information was written down by an old cousin years ago but I've not yet verified it from the records. They owned property in St. John so should be easy enough to trace when I get round to it.
